Imprisoned American basketball star Brittney Griner has reportedly been taken to a penal colony in Mordovia, a Russian region roughly 300 miles southeast of Moscow, to serve her nine-year sentence on drug charges.
Griner has been moved to IK-2 in Yavas, one of several penal colonies in the region, according to Reuters.
The WNBA All-Star's legal team confirmed the report on Thursday afternoon.
'We can confirm that Brittney began serving her sentence at IK-2 in Mordovia,' read her attorneys' statement. 'We visited her early this week. Brittney is doing as well as could be expected and trying to stay strong as she adapts to a new environment. Considering that this is a very challenging period for her, there will be no further comments from us.'
A State Department Spokesperson declined to confirm the Reuters report earlier, telling DailyMail.com that Russia has refused to share any details with the US Embassy.
'We are aware of reports of her location, and in frequent contact with Ms. Griner's legal team,' a State Department spokesperson wrote in an email to DailyMail.com. 'However, the Russian Federation has still failed to provide any official notification for such a move of a US citizen, which we strongly protest. The Embassy has continued to press for more information about her transfer and current location.'
Griner was sentenced in August following her February arrest at an airport in Moscow, when Russian authorities say she was caught entering the country with vape cartridges containing cannabis oil. She had been at a detention center near Moscow until November 4, when she was moved to an undisclosed prison.
It has been two weeks since any information about her whereabouts have surfaced.

He thinks America is horrible and oppressive, and has now found a home in Russia, sounds like a win to me!
Nine years isn’t all that long, maybe he will have time to reconsider his stance on terrible America.

Brittany Griner is the epitome of black privilege. She? is a talented athlete, making big money. Brittany played basketball in Russia in prior years, so she was familiar with Russia’s strict rules on drugs. She probably believed she was untouchable. She regularly trashed America, wouldn’t that give her cred with the Russians?
While is Russia, follow their rules.
