The Republican Party may be girding for a brutal internal war amid the wreckage of its midterm elections — and Donald Trump is ready to “burn it all down” if he can’t keep his grip on the GOP, predicts New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman.
Who or what remains standing after such a clash is far from clear, she noted Friday.
The throw-down is likely to begin next week when Trump is expected to announce that he’s running again for president, against the advice even of some of his allies. Trump has already been trashing potential primary rivals, including Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and possibly Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin and former Vice President Mike Pence.
Trump is “vulnerable” to internal attacks now in the wake of the Republican Party’s dismal showing in the midterms — but “that has happened before and he’s survived,” Haberman pointed out in a series of tweets.
“Extremely few major donors ... want to do anything for him right now and a number of them are having active conversations about the best way to stop him,” she added. “But. Again…sound familiar?”
Nevertheless, the party appears ready to do battle to shove Trump aside to improve Republican chances of future ballot box victories.

A 30 second moment of weakness is all these democrat monsters need. And since none of us walk on water (but human defense mechanisms make the unaware think they can) they win.
The only way to beat them is with a total SOB who can transcend 'the power' being a monster offers' (absolute power corrupts absolutely) - for 'the greater good. We all know who the total SOB is - and after he's broken the back of evil - we can run people like DeSantis - in '28. But not before...
Our people need to get together and form a plan.
Huffington Post = CNN on Paper
The only way to rectify this situation is for all conservatives across this country re-register as Democrats. Go to local/state meetings, political events, express your views and become a Democrat mover and shaker. Then vote for Republican candidates.
Haven’t been loving his behavior or words of late, but if he plans to burn it all down, I’ll help with the billows.
IMO, that ‘plan’ doesn’t include the Turtle, Eddie Munster, McCarthy or any of those RINO bastards who control the second-tier Congress right now. Screw them.
I have no doubt that Trump will run as an independent if he fails to secure the GOP nomination.
Picking a running mate might be difficult because you're pretty much asking someone to join you in drinking the cyanide-laced koolaid as far as their future political life is concerned.
"Here, drink this! We're going to lose spectacularly and when it's over, I'm going to blame you, and nobody will ever give you the time of day."
Good. It needs to burn. The GOPe is a complete failure.
Naw...I remember... not even buying it.
Drew, you have proudly denied election theft. You have zero credibility. It's a matter of fact, you are what's wrong with the GOPE.
And she is saying that like it would be a bad thing????
I think the uniparty’s plan for 2024 is to elect a republican President. By 2024 people will be desperate. They will be hungry and they will be cold and they will be without a job. We will be in throes of an economic depression. In order to keep the peace and restore faith in our political system and to show us once and for all that our elections aren’t rigged, it will be necessary for the oligarchy to to install a republican President I think that DeSantis has been told that if he runs he will be President. The one problem they have is if Trump runs he would likely win the republican primary and spoil all their plans and they may just have to let him win for the reasons listed above. Thus, the herculean push to get rid of him. What happens next? No one knows but we are headed for a showdown.
The best advice is to forget about 2024, the GOP is just too far gone.
If DeSantis can be of some use, it is to work behind the scenes to reform the National GOP into his image. Because until that happens, we get nowhere. And DeSantis cannot do that if he runs in 2024. Serve out his term, and do as Reagan did when he was California Governor.
That description fits Tulsi Gabbard to a T — which is why I specifically mentioned her.
What we are seeing is a major political realignment in the U.S. that has been years in the making. It’s not about conservatives vs. liberals anymore (if it ever really was), but about nationalists vs. globalists.
Ultimately, the biggest loser in all this is going to be the Republican establishment — because the powers in D.C. have already demonstrated over the last 2-4 years that they don’t need Republicans to implement their political agenda. That’s why we saw a flood of those “Republicans” endorsing Joe Biden in 2020, and why we are seeing a continued migration of establishment dopes like Liz Cheney away from the shrinking GOP camp.
Oh, noes…..not another GOP donors/voters bow to stop Trump hit piece!
Trump is the ONLY candidate NOT beholden to corrupt WSJ/McFail cult donors … so, there’s that.
Done talkin’ and ponderin’ Gonna vote for Trump if he runs.
President Trump has spoken to Maggie Haberman for *years*. She wrote a book based in part on several interviews with him.
Donald Trump cut off Haberman. All of these leaks to Haberman for the past two years including this one have been from Javanka. Expecially Jared. They are liberals and were never MAGA.
Trump and DeSantis first - they outline the plan. Then Trump runs for President and DeSantis creates Conservative Governors Outreach Committee.
DeSantis and other Republican Governors do what DeSantis has done to clean up election problems and clean out WOKE crap... the best from other Republican governors is used to make the plan stronger... In ‘28 DeSantis runs for President. Or Youngkin or whoever...
What’s left of Trump after being beat up for an additional four years is taken from the White House and celebrated forever.
“Donald Trump cut off Haberman. All of these leaks to Haberman for the past two years including this one have been from Javanka”
He may have cut her off, but she interviewed him in March 2021, “five weeks later”, and “the end of the summer” (2021)
