WILBUR-BY-THE-SEA, Fla. – Seven beachside homes in Wilbur-by-the-Sea collapsed into the Atlantic Ocean on Thursday after Nicole struck Florida as a hurricane and ripped across the state, devouring a large chunk of the coastline along Central Florida beaches.
A house located at 4101 S. Atlantic Ave. fell into the ocean Thursday morning and six other homes -- or at least a part of them -- also tumbled into the sea. No injuries were reported.
In 2014 a sinkhole opened up under a river that flowed next to our family cemetery that was established in 1840.
The river disappeared into an active lead mine and eventually was rerouted into an artificial channel that remains today...apparently OK with the Missouri department of natural resources.
Other sinkholes have opened up about a hundred feet from the cemetery, and another a little further away has taken out a gravel road that is part of the historic Trail of Tears.
None of these eco-warrior organizations such as the Sierra Club, seem to care.
If you lose your beachfront home to a storm in N.C. there’s a good chance the state won’t let you build back per N.C. Division of Coastal Management setback requirements.......I don’t know if Fla has that but if we don’t....we should.
“And these houses were not even on the top of a cliff.”
They are now......the ones that are still at least partially in tact anyway.
“the people living on the other side of the street now have beach front homes”
That’s one way to look at it.......another way to look at it is......they’re next. 😏
Since I don’t have any beachfront property I don’t know.
But with all that Global Warming, since I’m only a mile from the Choctawhatchee Bay, I might have in a few years!...............
It seems to me even if a section of a seawall didn’t give way, the entire thing will need to be replaced. Several big condos had to be evacuated also because of pool deck collapses and over topping of the seawall.
Yeah those homes are a total loss......who knows how bad those condos are damaged.
Didn’t a sinkhole get a bunch of Corvettes? Maybe in a museum?
Bowling Green Ky
I suspect the condo’s with pool desk collapses will be looked at very closely. A pool deck collapse is high on the suspect list for bringing down the Surfside condo last year.
Correctamundo. The Corvette Museum at the factory in Bowling Green, Ky. If I remember correctly they got most of the cars out but lost some irreplaceable Vettes.
It’s not far below it in much of truly flat, sea-level category areas. Some scientists believe that as fresh ground water is withdrawn and treated for cities and homes, voids are created that can result in sink holes.
