WILBUR-BY-THE-SEA, Fla. – Seven beachside homes in Wilbur-by-the-Sea collapsed into the Atlantic Ocean on Thursday after Nicole struck Florida as a hurricane and ripped across the state, devouring a large chunk of the coastline along Central Florida beaches.
A house located at 4101 S. Atlantic Ave. fell into the ocean Thursday morning and six other homes -- or at least a part of them -- also tumbled into the sea. No injuries were reported.

Wilbur-by-the-Sea was the last community before you got to the North Turn of the old Beach-Road Race Track at the onset of NASCAR.

The sinkhole that was filled in was probably a hundred feet deep. It had trees growing in it and every kind of trash you could think of from probably way back in the 40’s and 50’s................

Both fascinating and frightening. I recall when the sinkhole opened under a house and swallowed up a man sleeping in his bed. I do not recall if he was able to be rescued.

Are you and I still subsidizing home insurance for houses built on sand dunes?

Probably so, since it is a ‘Flood Zone’.......................

And these houses were not even on the top of a cliff....
There is a way to build on sand dunes, but it involves sinking pilings down to a great depth, and constructing the structure above the ground horizon in such manner that the wind and sea surge will simply wash over it. By making the upper portion of the structure almost egg-shaped, and with few indentations on the surfaces, like doors, porches or windows, and using reinforced concrete cast in place as the building material, it is possible to withstand even a Category 5 hurricane. Of course, the entire edifice may be standing on the stilts formed by the pilings, but the structure itself should come through in pretty good shape.

Florida State law requires perculation tests on any reclaimed or filled lands for five years prior to building on it. If the land can”t pass the perculation test you’re not going to build on it in any dhaoe or form. The land becomes vitually worthless.

Then there was the sinkhole in winterpark that swallowed the Porsche dealership, cars and all.

I bet the newcomers don’t know about the sinkhole. But in a few years they’ll find out.

It looks to me like some of the people living on the other side of the street now have beach front homes..
