I was stupid enough to buy a Michigan lotto ticket years ago. Won 1.1 million dollars. Even still after taxes it helped me buy a house and start my business. 32 years later I say it contributed to me being able to make more than that running a successful business. My business has won me the lottery more times than the lottery ever would.

How soon will the person who wins this be able to go bankrupt?

Look at the history of big jackpot winners and you see that things often go bad for them. Many wind up in bankruptcy court and at least one was actually murdered.

Those are the exceptions.

There's been hundreds of jackpot winners between Mega Millions and Powerball over the roughly three decades these games have been played. The vast majority of them disappear into anonymity, presumably enjoying their wealth responsibly.

It's those who don't, who crash and burn, who are newsworthy.

Go ahead and assume people will find out. Act accordingly. After getting the money, leave. Go somewhere where no one knows you. Stay there until you are ready to go somewhere else. Then start looking for a home away from where you live or grew up.

Our plan is to buy a house(s) near where we went to college.

If I had that kind of 9-figure FU money, I would buy Rush's place from Katherine, and yes, start broadcasting.

It will take some funding.

The joy of walking around for a day, thinking of all the fun to be had, good to be done, and telling my boss to kiss it, is more than worth the price of a couple tickets.

Any actual winnings is icing on the cake. As long as I keep that mindset, I never lose.

Now go vote!

Having done some traveling in Africa and having seen *real* poverty there I have real sorrow for what many Africans endure. If you haven't seen it close up,like I have,it might not hit you hard.No photo or film does it justice.

Kinda like it was for me with Ground Zero. Although I had seen a million photos and videos I was absolute stunned by what I saw in July of 2002 during my first visit.

Just sayin'...

Wife and I have spoken about winning lotteries in the past a lot. It’s fun, trying to think of things to do with so much cash. But the bottom line is, I’m a guy with very small needs, and my imagination isn’t big enough to apply to a $500 million windfall. I used to want to buy a nice airplane, but then you’re stuck with non-stop maintenance, and hiring someone to manage your stuff when you’re not around. That goes with anything. Owning nice fleets, a golf course, etc.

The more I think about it, the less stuff I’d want to own. One can have anything, but one loses the value of having it. It becomes meaningless, when working hard to afford that new truck, or house, gives a great reward for succeeding in that goal.

so the most important thing I can think to do with a MASSIVE pile of cash is to travel, and give. I don’t want to be the head of a huge investment business. It’s a whole career just managing the money, which I do not desire. But I’d love to be that guy that shows up at a club and anonymously pays everyone’s tab. That would be soul fulfilling, like to help a struggling waitress. Things like that.

Buy a lotto ticket and half goes to the government. You win the other half but then the government takes half of your winnings. In the end the gov get 3/4’s of the money. Not counting when you buy something that has a tax the gov gets another 10%! lol

Like everyone usually says, “Lotteries are for people who are bad at math”! lol

Seriously, I think I could manage a few million, take care of immediate family needs, hire some work done, stay anonymous, surprise some folks with mysterious gifts.

Just thinking about handling that big PowerBall pile properly is daunting.

I am pondering ‘losing my ticket’ as a mental exercise, instead.

Yah,with my luck I’ll leave the ticket I just bought in my pants pocket (without realizing it),stick them in the washing machine and that will wind up being the winning ticket. And when I read that the winning ticket was bought at the very same place mine was I’ll wonder...

Don’t believe that winning is impossible, 20 years ago I hit 5 numbers on Mega lotto and won $175,000, and if that isn’t crazy enough, a few weeks later I hit 4 numbers twice in a week and I RARELY played and still do. I haven’t bought any tickets in years but that $175K was nice. Too bad I didn’t get those 5 numbers today because they raised the prize to a million bucks.

Buy a lotto ticket and half goes to the government.

Well, in Texas only 37% goes to the Feds. No State Tax.

But you're right if you live in New York, with a 10.9% State Tax.

47.9% GONE.
