As she prepares to vote for the first time, Nirmala Singh says she can still feel the trauma of gender-based violence that’s been rippling through her life since childhood. When she was 5 years old and living in Guyana, her aunt was murdered by a former intimate partner. Moving to the U.S. as a teenager, Singh was surprised to see the same problems from back home reflected in the country she had once viewed as holding the promise for a better life.
Now 26, she’s watched for years as other immigrant women in her Queens neighborhood of New York — some who share her Indo-Caribbean identity — die in similar circumstances. A lack of access to reproductive care is one of the biggest holes she sees. Singh got her U.S. citizenship this year, and she’s using it to cast her first ballot.
“When Roe v. Wade was overturned, I remember you could hear this eerie silence for women, especially immigrant women, across the United States,” said Singh, who works with the South Queens Women’s March. “I’m worried that we’re not going to have the same freedom, the same access that we did before — that these services will be taken away. So that’s what’s really driving me to the polls.”
Health care is the top priority Asian American voters are taking to the ballot box, according to the 2022 Asian American Voter Survey; experts say a big reason for that is the overturning of of Roe v. Wade and the mounting restrictions on reproductive rights across the country. With studies finding that Asian American and Pacific Islanders show some of the highest levels of support for abortion rights, community leaders are expecting this issue to drive Asian Americans to the polls — many for the first time ever.

I once read a story were one Chinese woman was forced, by her mother-in-law to have 19 abortions because the MIL wanted a boy over a girl. The Chinese woman died after the 19th abortion and I blame the MIL. I hope no one ever married her son after that.
For those who have never seen the “number one son” phenomenon, it’s real, and it’s about as extreme as anyone can make it out to be.
“Asian wymyn” are some of the world’s proudest baby killers. The crown jewel of the RAT voting base. In Asia, life is cheap.
Exactly. The east asians have no problems murder female babies just to get a male baby.
The son deserves some of the blame, for not protecting his wife.
Looks like the RATS found themselves a new token to speak for the "asian women".
The studies I just took a look at suggest that is being seen in recent immigrant populations, not native born American women of Asian and Indian decent.
Seems to me that a preference for gender selection abortion should be yet another reason to restrict immigration, especially from China and India.
Wow I’m so glad that we allowed these people into our country.
Whether abortion is legal or not, it has been practiced in China for centuries. As a matter of fact, China is releasing data from their 2020 census and they’ve overcounted their population by one hundred million. Most of those were females who would have been born after the one child policy. This means that by the end of the century the population of China will be half what it is today. That’s if there’s no mass starvation from Chaiman Xi’s new Cultural Revolution. Which seems unlikely. As for Asians being over here, I doubt they’re making their vote contingent on this one policy. That’s because they don’t rely as heavily on the “normal” medical community for their treatments. I’m guessing they don’t like four-dollar gas and high taxes any more than the rest of us. I suspect this is a political scare article like the ones saying the Democrat is leading the Republican by X percent until a day before the election.
The article is the type of stupid bogus analysis that is why the Democrats will be “shocked” at their crushing defeat next week.
All polls show that abortion is a 5% to 7% issue while inflation is a 60%/70%/80% issue.
Add to that the fact that the only people whining about the Court’s decision are hard core Democrats and the impact on the election is negligible.
This is classic garbage mass media reporting.
Uh, I can provide a copy of the U.S. Constitution and I would be more than happy for ‘them’ to point out where that particular “right” they claim to have is located. Hello? Ms Bueller?
Probably right next to the requirement for CCW for firearms.
BS article as baby killing is legal in NY.
She’s hardly representative. She works as an activist. She’s in NY and is complaining about lack of access to abortion. In NYC. Come on now. The exploitation problem was imported so what is she doing to combat that scourge and reform her immigrant communities? She’s advocating for on demand abortion instead. This piece is propaganda from the racist, sexist, fascist Left.
They’re godless.
Bingo.
Fake news anyone?
Blacks commit by far most of the abortions in America.
Asians are not that stupid.
They actually love having children, especially if they just immigrated from China.
Another pathetic attempt from the notorious NBC to prop up a doomed Deem Party on Tuesday?
Yup.
My impression from bein in east Asia is that a child is considered really a person until it is a year old and really young children (toddlers) were not considered much of a person. After child got to be about 5/6 the family really doted on them in a way most Americans would think a bit much. But then little east Asian kids are often just absolutely delightful.
Funny how abortion is sugar coated by using the words “health care” and “reproductive rights”.
Sure.
Absolutely racist and misogynistic comments.
If you were an actual journalist, you’d find that the vast majority of women (and men) of Asian descent, that aren’t controlled by communist dictators, cherish life and family. Many will not only support their immediate families, but often times will assist in supporting their extended families, including their elders.
Try looking for truth rather “evidence” to support your personal agenda. Truth be told, the act of abortion (not “pro-choice”) is supported by a very, very small percentage of the population . . .
2nd or 3rd article on abortion today from NBC...they really are pushing hard to get the Dems to vote.
