I'm a GP. Medical professionals do NOT need to talk about your weight. [Says, "Weight-loss is not necessary to improve physical health."]

As a specialist GP working in Melbourne, I read Claire Murphy’s article about being fat shamed last week and instantly felt sad, but not surprised.

I read her words slowly – twice over in fact - and listened to her tell her story on the podcast. Then I took a deep breath and walked away from my laptop to collect my thoughts, and acknowledge the emotions swirling in my head and my heart.

“I know medical professionals need to talk about weight.”

Those are Claire’s words – and they were ringing in my ears.

But as a GP who has had the privilege to care for patients of all shapes, and sizes, and as an individual in a larger body myself who has been fat-shamed by colleagues - I do not agree.

Medical professionals do NOT need to talk about your weight.

Medical professionals need to talk about ways to improve your overall health and wellbeing.

Your health and wellbeing are NOT THE SAME THING as your weight.

Weight-loss is not necessary to improve physical health.

Weight-loss is not necessary to improve emotional and psychological wellbeing.

It’s not hard to lose weight and do it deliciously. Bodybuilders are masters at burning fat but retaining muscle.

For mesomorphs maybe. For endpmorphic types it is damn near the hardest thing in the world.

Weight loss is not all about what you eat. Stress, hormones, genetics, many things contribute. A dr who understands that and is willing to help you deal with it all, has more of a chance to have a patient achieve weight loss.

The rate of change may vary from individual to individual, but you only need to do the principles. An endomorph may have to be somewhat more disciplined and expect a slower rate of change, but it’s the same process for everybody.

The way a bodybuilder will burn fat, aside from exercise, is he will his calorie content until he is losing a pound every week. However, to keep his muscle from being metabolized, he will prioritize his calories away from carbohydrates and focus of protein and fat.

I’m not suggesting to lose a pound/week. Set yourself to lose it every two weeks or three weeks or a month. As long as you are doing it consistently and as part of a lifestyle.

Well, if a bear was chasing us, I would make it back to the vehicle. I might have to trip her, though.

She makes some points.

Weight loss is not automatically required for good health.

What she does not mention is very large numbers of people in modern society are unhealthily overweight.

She looks at the exceptions rather than the rule.

When you are stressed out, or you find life unpleasant, the tendency is to eat carbs. When you eat carbs, you release the happy hormone called Serotonin. When you get Serotonin, you feel better about yourself and your life.

When you eat too many carbs, the body stores those carbohydrates in your fat cells.

Your body is preparing for a future famine as a response to stress.
For most people, cutting the calories with a primary focus on cutting the carbohydrates until they find the balance between their body calorie intake and deficit will cause them to lose weight.

It doesn’t have to be done quickly, if you have made it a lifestyle. Even a pound/month is enough for long-term weight loss.

There are more than “health” benefits to being at an appropriate weight. You look better, your clothes fit better, and life is just more COMFORTABLE when you limbs aren’t padded with fat and you don’t have a massive belly to deal with. Encouraging people to remain overweight is not doing them any favors.

I see gluttons are just as proud to parade their foolishness regarding health these days as immunologists.

Telling stupid people what they want to hear.

One can get rich doing it.

They also tend to not live as well, when they are living.
They have to cut their activities throughout the day, so they can get through their day.

I will say, just so you are aware, that when bodybuilders are cutting that they are as miserable as anybody else who has to diet. They can’t eat until they are full and they can’t eat the foods they like when they are cutting.

It isn’t just those who need to diet for weight control that are miserable.

So many people have views but they don’t read the literature.
Yes, if you’re over weight you are more at risk.

If you are overweight and want a knee replacement or a hit replacement, you need to lose some weight first and stop smoking.

If you are losing weight and you are not dieting, it’s significant. See your doctor. If he/she ignores your weight loss, see another doctor.

BS.
Weight is a huge factor.
That woman should have her medical licenses pulled.
She’s violating the Hippocratic Oath.
I’m a Medical Technologist, what she is selling is plain nuts.
