Jerry Jones’ Halloween costume could lead to fine

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones may find himself in hot water with the NFL after wearing a blind referee costume with glasses and a cane for Halloween. The NFL usually doesn’t take too kindly to jokes by NFL team officials or players at the expense of referees.

When asked by a reporter why he wore that costume over the weekend, Jones didn’t seem to take it too seriously. In fact, he said imitation is the highest form of flattery.

“I had a lot of fun,” he said. “I’m being very careful here because I’m getting real close to a fine. It shows how much I love them to dress up as them…how much I respect their decision-making.”

Not sure the NFL will accept Jones’s explanation but at least he is aware of the possibility that he may see a fine coming his way because of the joke. The NFL is not known for having a good sense of humor when it comes to these types of things. Legendary Chicago Bears quarterback Jim McMahon battled with the late NFL commissioner Pete Rozelle about wearing a headband during a game. Despite being fined, McMahon kept doing it. When he was a wide receiver, Chad Johnson altered his uniform before an NFL game, the NFL levied a huge fine against him. Given that he’s a billionaire, whatever fine the NFL levied on him would likely be negligible anyway.

All the sports are touchy about the refs being mocked. The all have rules about the stadium sound system playing 3 Blind Mice too. Fans are allowed to mock them of course, but nobody actually tied to a team or facility.

Always have been. NFL Patriots coach Bill Belichick was fined $50,000 for touching a referee after a game that was officiated by amateur refs when the regular refs were on strike.

Just last week a NBA owner was fined $32,000 for cussing out a referee for what he considered a bad call.

A while back a NBA GM was suspended one game and fined $25,000 for entering the referees’ locker room where he protested a bad call.................

This is a step beyond that. I am not a Jerry Jones fan, but he should be able to have some fun on Halloween like everyone else. It's not like he dressed up as Al Jolson in blackface or did an old fashioned Southern minstrel show. The NFL needs to take a joke.
