When eyeglasses came out OTC, some tried to scare the crud out of everyone for not going to the real eye doctor who would probably save them from going blind before they knew it!

About a year ago my wife told me she had noticed significant hearing loss in me. So I went to get checked and the doctor told me I had moderate to sever age-related high frequency loss. He said because I still hear low frequencies well I'd hear men well but I'd probably not be able to hear my wife very well.

I said "Okay, is there any downside?"

I see an audiologist, which I find very helpful. She gave me prescription hearing aids, but more important fitted them to my ears and ear canal and fine tuned them to address the frequencies where I have the most loss. They are pricey but I can adjust them from my phone for different environments and volumes. I often attend meetings in large rooms and properly adjusted they are super helpful there.

Plus, my kids no longer say "oh Dad" because I don't have to keep saying "what"?

The Phillips hearing aids I got at Costco are wonderful. Got a REAL hearing test as part of the cost, and other ‘free’ follow on services.

$1799 turn key, with 3 yrs of replacement insurance.

Also reimbursed by my employer.

Free*. Heck of a deal

I’ve noticed my wife getting hard of hearing so I did a test. With her working at the stove and her back to me I called out her name from across the kitchen. No response.

I took a few steps closer and repeated her name, with no response.

I did this several times until I was just 2 feet from her and finally got a response.

They changed the definition of hearing aids and called it a win:

Sen. grey beaver took Bose money to make it happen.

You were smart to get your hearing checked. And if something sudden or strange happens to your hearing, it is a good idea to have it checked with an Ear, Nose and Throat doctor. Some hearing loss can be from an illness or problem that can be treated. It could be one is “just getting old” or it could be something else. It is important to know just what is going on.

Don’t laugh. Those gadgets really work. Cup your hands behind your ears and you will see the difference. You’re just collecting more vibrating molecules and funneling them into you ear.

And they are less expensive than hearing aids. Much less expensive.
