About a year ago my wife told me she had noticed significant hearing loss in me. So I went to get checked and the doctor told me I had moderate to sever age-related high frequency loss. He said because I still hear low frequencies well I'd hear men well but I'd probably not be able to hear my wife very well.

I said "Okay, is there any downside?"

I’ve noticed my wife getting hard of hearing so I did a test. With her working at the stove and her back to me I called out her name from across the kitchen. No response.

I took a few steps closer and repeated her name, with no response.

I did this several times until I was just 2 feet from her and finally got a response.

You were smart to get your hearing checked. And if something sudden or strange happens to your hearing, it is a good idea to have it checked with an Ear, Nose and Throat doctor. Some hearing loss can be from an illness or problem that can be treated. It could be one is “just getting old” or it could be something else. It is important to know just what is going on.

My wife has a very weak voice. Even though I passed a recent hearing test, when we’re in public, I just can’t differentiate her whispers from the background.

If she talks louder she thinks she’s yelling when in reality it’s still less than normal decibel level.

I know it’s an cliche, but mine complains all the time that I need to get my hearing checked. For years I got regular checkups from my employer and my hearing is always just fine.

I have just developed an uncanny ability to tune out to anybody thats speaking from raising our 2 CAF kids. If you had to listen to their crazy 24/7 it would drive you nuts.

On the flip side I have acute office hearing so much so that I can tune in to office conversations several desks away or through walls as I walk by. It has helped me stay ahead of daily office BS.
