Each year on October 21st, National Pumpkin Cheesecake Day ushers in the flavors of fall. Cheesecake is one of America’s favorite desserts and by adding pumpkin, we celebrate the essential flavoring of the season.

This sweet dessert mixes fresh soft cheese, cream cheese or cottage cheese, eggs, and sugar to create a base. The crust is made from crushed graham crackers, crushed cookies, pastry, or sponge cake. Pumpkin may be added to cheesecake recipes in various ways. For example, it may be swirled throughout, mixed thoroughly with all ingredients, or layered. Bakers prepare cheesecakes both baked or unbaked. Some bakers flavor cheesecakes and top them with fruit, fruit sauce, chocolate, or whipped cream.
When is National Cheesecake Day?
An ancient form of cheesecake may have been a popular dish in ancient Greece. The earliest attested mention of cheesecake is by the Greek physician, Aegimus. He wrote a book on the art of making cheesecakes.
James Kraft developed a form of pasteurized cream cheese in 1912. In 1928, Kraft acquired the Philadelphia trademark and marketed pasteurized Philadelphia Cream Cheese.

1879
In his Menlo Park, NJ laboratory, Thomas Edison demonstrates the first lasting electric lightbulb. After 1,200 unsuccessful experiments that did not hold up or were short-lived, led Edison to a bulb that burned 40 hours. By the end of the year, Edison would demonstrate the durable bulb to the public.
1940
Ernest Hemmingway publishes the novel For Whom the Bell Tolls. Considered one of the best war novels ever written, the story follows a young American soldier attached to a guerilla unit during the Spanish Civil War.
1963
The Trimline phone designed by Henry Dreyfuss was installed in a home for the first time. The phone’s design offered a freedom that hadn’t been possible on previous phones, though the phone was still corded. With the dial on the handset instead of the base unit, users could dial and disconnect without being near the base unit.
2014
Trevor Hunt carved 109 pumpkins in one hour, setting a world record. The record-breaking display took place during the filming of The Meredith Vieira Show in New York City.

Samuel W. Alderson – 1914

Dizzy Gillespie – 1917
The daring jazz trumpeter, composer, and bandleader was one of the pioneers of bebop. He’s known for his sense of humor, puffed cheeks, and playing a bent trumpet. Some of his notable songs include “Ooh-Shoo-Be-Doo-Bee,” “Blue ‘N’ Boogie,” and “Salt Peanuts.” In 1995, Gillespie was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

Pumpkin cheese cake? The worst of both worlds...
Well, I hate pumpkin AND cheesecake. Maybe I should just go back to bed. My daughter ate the last of her mixed-berry pie, which is more compatible with my denomination.
I’m not very big into pumpkin desserts, except I do like a pumpkin roll, which is like a pumpkin cake with cream cheese filling.
I do enjoy cheesecake but don’t make it very often.
I’ve never tried pumpkin cheesecake, but maybe I will one of these days.
PUMPKIN STRUSEL CHEESECAKE WITH CARAMEL SAUCE
Ingredients
PUMPKIN
3/4 cup (168g) unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled
1 1/2 cups (216g) light brown sugar, unpacked
1 tsp vanilla
1 egg
1 egg white
1 cup (233g) canned pumpkin puree
1 3/4 cups (228g) all purpose flour
1/4 tsp + 1/8 tsp baking powder
1 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp nutmeg
1/4 tsp ginger
1/4 tsp cloves
1/4 tsp salt
CHEESECAKE
20 oz (565g) cream cheese, room temperature
1 cup (144g) brown sugar, unpacked
3/4 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp nutmeg
Pinch of allspice
1 cup (240ml) heavy whipping cream
1/2 cup (58g) powdered sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract
STREUSEL
2/3 cup (87g) all purpose flour
2/3 cup (150g) light brown sugar, packed
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp nutmeg
Pinch of cloves
4 tbsp (56g) salted butter, melted
Caramel sauce
Instructions
1. Line the bottom of a 9 inch springform pan (or cake pan) with parchment paper and grease the sides. Preheat the oven to 350°F (176°C).
2. Add the melted butter and brown sugar to a medium sized bowl and and whisk to combine.
3. Add the vanilla, egg and egg white and whisk until combined.
4. Fold in the pumpkin puree.
5. In another bowl, combine the dry ingredients.
6. Gently fold the dry ingredients to wet ingredients, folding just until combined. Do not overmix.
7. Spread batter evenly into springform pan and bake for 27-30 minutes.
8. Allow the blondie to sit for 3-5 minutes, then remove to a cooling rack to finish cooling.
9. Once the blondie is cool, make the cheesecake. In a large bowl, beat the cream cheese until smooth.
Add the brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and all spice and mix until well combined.
10. In a separate bowl, whip the heavy whipping cream, powdered sugar and vanilla extract until stiff peaks form.
11. Gently fold the whipped cream into the cream cheese mixture.
12. Place the blondie back into the 9 inch springform pan. Line the sides of the pan with parchment paper that sticks about an inch above the sides of the pan to account for possible overflow.
13. Top the blondie with the cheesecake mixture and spread into an even layer, then refrigerate until firm, about 5-6 hours.
14. Once firm, remove the cheesecake from the springform pan.
15. To make the streusel, preheat the oven to 350°F (176°C).
16. Add the flour, brown sugar, cinnamon and melted butter to a medium sized bowl and mix with a fork until all ingredients are well combined and crumbly.
17. Sprinkle the mixture evenly onto a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper and bake for 6-8 minutes, until lightly crispy, then set aside to cool.
18. Once cool, crumble the streusel back into pieces, if needed, and sprinkle over the cheesecake. Drizzle the cheesecake with caramel sauce, if desired, then serve.
No. There is cheesecake, and there is pumpkin pie. Never the twain shall meet.
Yuk. I love having a piece or two of pumpkin pie on Thanksgiving Day, but that’s about it. And it needs to be slathered in extra creamy Cool Whip that comes in the red tub. But pumpkin everything for three months is a bit too much.
