Air travel controversy: Passengers who recline their seats on flights are seen as ‘rude’

Where do you stand — or sit, as the case may be — on a controversial air travel issue?

For years people have weighed in on whether they (or other passengers) should fully recline their seats during a flight, especially amid a long flight — because the act of reclining that seat means the person seated behind the airplane chair will have far less space than otherwise.

People are vehement on both sides of this issue. (“Yes, go for it! It’s your seat and you paid for it!” some say — while others maintain with equal passion, “No, don’t recline your seat! It’s extremely rude to the person sitting behind you.”)

Now comes further discussion and controversy.

A user on Reddit named u/cherryham123 recently shared that she was on a flight to the U.S. from Australia — “14 hours,” she added — “and sometime into the flight, I reclined my seat to sleep.”

But then, the person posted, “The girl behind me poked me and told me to not recline my seat because she was uncomfortable. What is the etiquette here?”

Fox News Digital reached out to the user for comment. Ree Winter, an Australian, replied and shared further details of her trip with Fox News Digital via email.

“I was flying to America to see my partner,” she said. “It was a flight to LAX [Los Angeles International Airport]. After the woman behind me poked my seat repeatedly, I turned to look at her — and she then told me that she was trying to watch a movie and I shouldn’t recline my seat.” …

“What is the etiquette here?”

The Golden Rule might apply.

I recently had to deal with a guy in front of me who reclined his seat - my response was to do the same. Feel sorry for those who can’t come up with that option.

“recline” conjures up a nice easy chair....these plane seats barely move....maybe a couple of inches seemingly....its one reason why air plane travel is not my cup of tea.

I don’t fly anymore. If I have to go any real distance, I’ll take the train and book a sleeper compartment. Shorter distances, I’ll just drive. I doubt if I will ever fly again.

reclining is rude.
complaining about it is dumb.

However, I have pretty much given up on flying. I refuse to pay $$$ to be treated like cattle.

Looks to be an airline issue with seats being too close.

However, with the seat in front of me reclined back, I have issues getting out of my seat. Chances are I will knock the seat in front of me standing up.

It is unpleasant. I’d never thought of it as rude, but thinking about it, yes, it is.

They should probably do away with it or increase distance between seats, but this latter won’t happen.

Reclining is necessary on long flights. I’ve been on many that are 8+ hours...

Sheesh, a 40 year old problem!

This wasn't a problem when air fares were regulated and carriers could make a lot of money off business fliers with seats spaced far apart.

Then airline deregulation came along and the airlines crammed in as many seats as possible. If the "Skyrider 3.0" seat becomes a reality, these complainers will look back fondly to 2022. In the not-too-distant future, "You will have zero seat space and be happy."

I’m a rude boy as I sleep on planes and sitting up all the way sucks.

Take it up with the airline. The “recline” angle is a joke but anything helps the back pain as opposed to being totally upright.

I think that’s what it is. I don’t remember that being a problem in the 80s and even the 90s.

As personal seat space got smaller and smaller, reclining seats became an issue.

Try flying Southwest in the sardine can formation those planes have. Worst flight of my life.

Not only are you tightly squeezed, but the folks that you sit next to have zero awareness of their own hygiene.

I think they should just hang the passengers by their ankles from the ceiling like sides of beef, then fill the cabin with mildly sedative gas and pipe in some pleasant music.

I’ve flown for many decades and it’s simply not rude to recline your seat. Granted, don’t slam it backwards suddenly in case it hits someone behind you, but these people who say not to recline the seat need to get over themselves.
