Nick Saban Calls for Consistency in Officiating
Bama Central on FanNation ^ | Oct 17, 2022 | Katie Windham

A pass interference call wiped out a crucial interception for the Crimson Tide in the loss at Tennessee.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Alabama has officially been penalized more than any other team in the country.

After the Crimson Tide got called for a program-record 17 penalties Saturday against Tennessee, it's no surprise that penalties were a major theme of Nick Saban's Monday press conference.

Whether it be pass interference, which wiped out a game-sealing interception for the second week in a row, or pre-snap infractions, or special teams penalties that negated big gains, Saban is frustrated with it all.

Depending on the type of infraction, whether or not to throw a flag is a judgement call by the officials in college football, which Saban understands, but the main thing he's asking for his consistency among the officials, particularly when it comes to pass interference.

"Look, my big thing is just consistency," Saban said when asked if he thought pass intereference should be reviewable. "Just call it the same for everybody. And it’s hard to define exactly what you can and can’t do. I would rather see that happen. In the NFL, they defined exactly what you can and can’t do and it’s a really, really difficult judgement call, but you knew exactly what you could and couldn’t do. I think that would be beneficial."

With 25 seconds left on the clock and the game tied, Alabama called three straight running plays, then still left a 50-yard kick for a right-footed kicker from the right hash mark (not a statistically ideal predicament).

The field goal attempt was well wide, giving Tennessee the ball the ball with 15 seconds still on the clock and two time-outs remaining. At that moment, Tennessee’s offense was hot and Alabama’s defense was not.

According to ESPN’s “Probability Metric,” in those ten seconds, Alabama’s odds of winning the game went from 67% to 18.5%.

Alabama lost because of the team’s lack of discipline (17 penalties, a school record) and Saban’s mismanagement of the clock.

Saban also is doing a pathetic job pf emulating the coach who put Alabama football on the map, Paul “Bear” Bryant.

And did you ever see an uglier field goal kick win a football game?

After last year, what makes you think you are better, and Michigan is worse?

If anything, Michigan has a defense as good as last year, with an offense that’s way better. They can ball control, or pass, and their QB can run.

Good luck, you’re gonna need it.

"...Alabama called three straight running plays,..."

Sorry, obviously I meant "...three straight pass plays ..."

Bama hasn’t played well this season. They almost lost to Texas and to Texas A&M. Arkansas was close until we broke a couple of long ones. They’re a little soft this year.

Bingo. I coached kids’ baseball. When they whined about calls, I told them to beat not only the other team but the umpires, too. If he’s calling low ones strikes instead of balls, SWING at them.

Every team gets bad calls and good calls. Just take ‘em and play.

Same goes for roughing the passer, they should just make quarterbacks wear dresses, like Jack Lambert suggested.

Ah, just make it flag football on the quarterbacks as long as they're behind the line of scrimmage.

But it is hard to replace NFL-caliber starters year after year.

Especially if you are being outgunned on N-I-L contracts.

Yes, can’t remember the exact game but it was about 10 years ago during the Tide’s sorry kicker era, Bama kicked a wounded duck spinning sideways for the FG.

Yes the refs made bad calls.

The call Saban is whining about was 10000% correct however. Clear pass interference on the Bama player.

Legalized sports betting will destroy NCAA sports probably sooner than professional sports.

‘There weren’t 17 bad calls against them.’

perhaps; but I responded to your point that in the end the calls balance out...and in this game, they certainly did not...

Oh, come on! The LAST thing Saban wants is consistency. Unless it’s the consistent benefit of the doubt he has received for the last decade.

‘When you have at least one arm wrapped around the receiver before the ball arrives, and you are visibly pulling the other player away from the ball, that is pass interference.’

except that happens on just about every single pass play today, just like holding; football as it is played today, is being officiated as if it were fifty years ago...

nowadays, all a QB has to do is crank up an underthrown ball, and there will be flag, as receivers and defenders collide on their way back to the ball...the game is rewarding its players for playing poorly...

‘The call Saban is whining about was 10000% correct however. Clear pass interference on the Bama player.’

except any number of times ‘clear pass interference’ is not called, throuhgout the entire game; his gripe is legit to the extent that it was called at a point that sealed the victory for the opponent...

the flag came out well after the play occurred; if a ref cannot immediately make up his mind that a foul occurred, the flag should stay in the pocket...additionally, if the call is likely going, to seal the result of game, the flag should stay in the pocket...the result of any game should be determined by actual play, not by fiat officiation...

‘After what Michigan did to Penn State, who slaughtered Auburn...’

Auburn has two earned victories, one against Mercer (?) and a desultory one score game against San Jose...Missouri gifted them a victory by dropping a ball while crossing the goal, and missing a 26 yd FG...using a victory over them as any type of metric is meaningless...

as for UM, Maryland played them to a standstill at Ann Arbor, and Penn St was clearly overrated; we need to see more from them before conferring a title on them...
