Mars May Have Had Life Until Climate Change Ended It, New Study Suggests (only 8.26 years left)

Mars is increasingly in the viewfinder of planetary scientists, as NASA has made it a goal to send a manned mission to the red planet, sending rovers to its surface and developing technology to prepare for human exploration. The increased focus on Mars has led to some intriguing discoveries - most recently, that life might have existed on the planet before climate change ended it. That's the suggestion of a new study; read on to find out more.

Researchers from the University of Arizona aren't positive there was once life on Mars (in a news release, they call it a "big if"), but they've determined that conditions on the young planet could have supported it. In their study, published in the journal Nature Astronomy, the researchers note that today Mars is dry and freezing cold, seemingly uninhabitable. But four billion years ago, the planet had an atmosphere that was conducive to life - rich in carbon dioxide and hydrogen, which would have allowed water to flow and microbes to flourish.

"Our study shows that underground, early Mars would very likely have been habitable to methanogenic microbes," said Regis Ferrière, a University of Arizona professor and senior author of the paper. These kinds of microbes live by converting chemical energy from their environment and releasing methane as waste. Some of the same kinds of microbes exist in extreme habitats on Earth, such as hydrothermal vents along fissures in the ocean floor.

"The research team tested a hypothetical scenario of an emerging Martian ecosystem by using models of Mars' crust, atmosphere and climate, coupled with an ecological model of a community of Earthlike microbes metabolizing carbon dioxide and hydrogen," the university said in a news release. They determined that about 4 billion years ago, Mars' atmosphere contained a high amount of hydrogen...

May have had life. Emphasis on “may”.

It absolutely did, but it was in the ancient past. Late 1970's/early 80's I believe.

I’ve read more believable science fiction about Mars than current “scientific” speculation.

Which one of those microbes were drilling for oil and which ones were building the SUVs? Oh and when did their dinosaurs die out to create oil? Because we are told this is the only way to cause Climate Change.

You see the Martian’s trashed their planet and with what they had left of their technology they came here long ago and we are their decedent’s. Unfortunately we neve adapted to the much stronger gravity and that is why are backs hurt all the time !

Wow! That’s amazing, simply incredible, err un-credible. Someone please explain to me how they were able to create the logic, equations, and data for something infinitely complex for which there is little tangible knowledge. Just asking for a friend.

This shit is coming from Arizona State University. It receives state and federal funding from your tax dollars. That needs to stop.

I have to hand it to the left, they pulled off marketing genius by relabeling Global Warming to Climate Change. You can’t actually say there isn’t climate change, it can’t be denied in a very literal sense.

As for Mars life, I’m saying there was never any life on Mars. Mars has no effective magnetic field protecting the planet, protecting the atmosphere from Solar rays/energy.

It may at one time had a magnetic field, early in it’s life when the core was still molten, much like Earth. However, being at such a greater distance from the Sun, and being much smaller of a planet as well, the core is solidified, the magnetic field gone, and with that the atmosphere was blasted away by the sun.

During the short time that Mars had a thicker atmosphere and magnetic field, did it spawn life? I don’t think so. This is also why all this talk of Humans moving and living on Mars is complete fantasy nonsense. How are we to survive without a magnetic field? Are we going to live underground on Mars? People are being duped. You cannot and will never live on Mars.

“Climate change also ended life on the sun. It’s true. Probably. Science.”

I’m guessing they probably found the Tesla Musk sent into space.

All this talk of life on Mars is pure hokum and science fiction, it’s a tool to distract some from the real issues here on Earth.

Loss of the atmosphere isn’t really climate change.

This confirms that we need to do something about climate change. /s

Ooh, the scientists forgot to mention that humans had nothing to do with Mars climate change; it was caused by cosmic forces alone.

Here's the truth: The earth has been changing, including its climate, since its creation - without the influence of men.

Musta been because of all those brick factories and suv’s and cow farts. When will we ever learn?

Yes, Marvin the Martian and Uncle Martin were the survivors of Mars civilization. To prove it, I’ll need 4 Trillion dollars. :-)

And one day, 200 years from now, they will make pluto a planet again and say that climate change, created by the plutians, killed them off.

Wouldn’t those microbes have continue to evolve as the atmosphere changed? Surely the natural selection process would happen faster than a complete Mars-wide change of the atmosphere’s composition, no? Earth used to have way more CO2 and hardly any oxygen, and yet here we are.

Was it Martian-made climate change that ended life on mars?

No, evil Trump supporting Republicans on Earth...
