Hong Kong offers 500,000 free air tickets to tempt tourists back

Hong Kong attracted around 56 million visitors a year before the pandemic, and now the popular destination is taking significant steps to win tourists back after over two years of some of the world's toughest travel restrictions. Just days after dropping its longstanding mandatory hotel quarantine requirement, Hong Kong has confirmed plans to give away half a million airline tickets in a bid to boost tourism. The move, first announced two years ago, was confirmed to CNN by a spokesperson from the Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK), which said that the 500,000 tickets, worth around $254.8 million, would go to global visitors, along with residents. "Back in 2020, Airport Authority Hong Kong purchased around 500,000 air tickets in advance from the territory's home-based airlines as part of a relief package to support the aviation industry," says the spokesperson. "The purchase serves the purpose of injecting liquidity into the airlines upfront, while the tickets will be given away to global visitors and Hong Kong residents in the market recovery campaign."

“Incoming international travelers must submit a pre-flight vaccination certificate, as well as a negative PCR test and rapid antigen test, before entering.
Once they’ve been permitted to enter, visitors are required to undergo a three-day self-monitoring period, during which time they’re prohibited from eating in restaurants or visiting bars.
Visitors also need to complete PCR tests on days 2, 4 and 6 after arrival, and a rapid antigen test every day for seven days.”

No Thanks to all of that!

Imagine New York without the liberals and lunatics which promote the criminals and high costs. That was Hong Kong back in the mid 1990s.

I visited Hong Kong in 1995 when it was still a British colony. It was a wonderful city! I travelled there again in 2001, after handover in 1997, and everyone suddenly forgot English.

Wish I still had my Matchbox collection from the 60s. Also my all-steel Tonka trucks.

Might be worth some coin today, or at least nostalgia.

foolishly drank the local water and paid for it . . .

Back in the day when I lived in Japan and worked for Mitsubishi, one of the well traveled guys in the company gave me a sound piece of advice: On these short-term business assignments, go to your local market, buy a two liter bottle of water and drink only from that while you are away unless you are willing to drink the local alcohol or Coca-Cola products instead. They are world famous for using safe water and even sell bottled water in some countries.

That advice served me well and the only time I almost got in trouble for it was when a Saudi customs agent gave it a good looking over. He finally scowled and put it back in my luggage when I invited him to open and sniff.

Funny story, my favorite one was a 1978 Trans Am.
When I was 21, I bought a 1978 Trans Am.

No thanks. Asians tend to be mask Nazis and Hong Kong combines two of the worst characteristics of the Chinese: greed and law and order fetishism.

If I had a favorite Matchbox, it was probably the Alvis Stalwart. Never owned a real one, though.

Too bad they don’t offer 500,000 airline tickets to residents wanting to escape

ChiComs will lock you in jail for saying the wrong thing.

It’s a tarp.

People should not go to illegally occupied Hong Kong.

I just checked; there’s an outfit in the UK that appears to sell them as surplus. Prices aren’t too bad but I’ll bet they don’t offer free delivery.

My last visit of many was in May, 2019 - just as the anti-government protests (the ones directly responsible for China initiating the COVID pandemic) were beginning. Hong Kong still felt very international then, though it had been trending authoritarian in previous years. I’m afraid today it would feel like visiting any other Chinese city.
