Vladimir Pozner; How the United States Created Vladimir Putin (2018)
Yale University Program in Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies ^ | 2018 | Yale University

This 2018 lecture appears very accurate retrospectively. The first 45 minutes is Pozner's lecture, followed by an equally good question and answer period.

It is one of the most objective presentations I have heard, especially about how the Clintons created Putin.

Pozner was a Soviet propagandist who made the rounds of America in the 1980s, telling us all about the wonders of communism and how happy and content the Soviet people were with their communist paradise, all the while blaming America for every aspect of the Cold War.

Phil Donahue was captivated and was ever eager to sit for long periods being lectured by Pozner with the cameras rolling.

He instantly evaporated the nano-second the Soviet Union fell. I thought we’d never hear from him again.

I remember his English was flawless.

You can hear a lot of things streaming on the internet. You can go directly to some websites. A good app is called Tune In Radio. You can set up a free account. There is an Android and an Apple TunIn Radio app. I can also use their website to stream from on my PC. You set up an account and choose what stations you are interested in. You can organize them any way you like.

A lot of apps are music apps where you can listen to snippets of music from whatever genre or band, so it is not like listening to radio broadcasts. TuneIn Radio is more like tuning in on live broadcasts. Also look up http:/radio.garden - that is also like tuning in a radio on your conputer or phone.

As far as a shortwave receiver, Sangean and Tecsun make good portable shortwave radios. I don’t have this one but the Tecsun PL880 is something I have heard good comments about, and it is around $170. And there are other models. I think Tecsun and Sangean are good bets. Avoid really cheap (under $100) radios that have shortwave - their receivers are poor and you won’t be able to hear much.

Shortwave broadcasting has diminished greatly in the last 10 years. You might be able to hear regional broadcasters from South America, Africa, or Asia. Most of these are hard to receive without a good antenna and a really good radio. There are religious broadcasters - mostly just faith healers and end-of-the-world “prophets” - so I consider that a waste of time.

If your radio has Single Side Band you might be able to hear ship and long distance aircraft communication, and also ham radio conversations. The radio spectrum is split up into bands. On shortwave there are bands for ham radio, there are bands for broadcasting, and bands for utility stations (including ships and aviation).

I still use a DX-440 I bought from Radio Shack over 30 years ago.

Ahhhh. I didn’t know that. I assumed he was Soviet born and raised but just has a genius for language.

Pozner made the same tired arguments that Russian apoligists have been making since George Kennan, that the world is the US’ and Russia’s to carve up like a fatted calve.

And the KGB and Yeltsin had nothing to do with it.

In 1993 I bought a DX-350 and a DX-390. Spent many hours listening in across the globe. Took the 350 to Ukraine in 1995 ad heard long band for the first time. Very cool.

I loved the rugby matches from New Zealand but my favorite was Radio Pyongyang, which broadcasted early morning for 15 minutes daily. Real, old school "running dogs of capitalist imperialism" commie propaganda. Really got a kick out of that.

More than his English. His fluency in American idiom was flawless and I believe he was American born.

Thanks.. Listened to quite a bit of it and fell asleep as it is after midnight here..

He is good. I’ll listen to it again in the morning...

I did screen shots of some of his slides, like the Ukraine voting patterns by county.

Been traveling and lacking sleep..

🙏

NO WAY a country where top government officials who attempted to criminally undermine, compromise and overthrow a legitimately elected president, and their hired guns in the CIA/FBI etc, would never start any wars and or attempt to destabilize/overthrow/undermine other countries.

You bet.

He and Phil Donahue, a couple of early hate-America lefties, for sure.

Pozner was born in France to a Russian father, but grew up later in USA and Germany, with mostly foreign influence, methinks.

You’re right. I remember now. I used to tune in Radio Moscow on my Hallicrafters when I was in HS. He supposedly responded to letters from America. Tried to show life in SU was cool. They even allowed you to own a rifle or shotgun if you stored it with a Party gun club.

His fluency in American idiom was flawless

Yep. He was conversant with all the little nuances, references and subtleties usually only mastered by a sophisticated native speaker.
