Many people have been in the shower when that brilliant, light bulb moment suddenly strikes! It can seem like a strange place to have great ideas, but researchers say “shower thoughts” are pretty common. So, why do so many people get a spark of creativity while washing up?
While previous research has suggested that people get more creative when their mind wanders, a new study finds that those mindless tasks (like showering) aren’t so mindless after all.
The new study challenges past research that seemed to prove what many scientists thought about letting the mind wander. That study found that when people perform “undemanding” tasks, the brain tends to wander. When that happens, creativity starts to flow.

No wonder that Bernie just plays the same socialist song his whole life
He hasn’t bathed since the 60s
I walk 6-8 miles a day. A couple of my co-workers, really great guys, started to walk with me. Inexplicably, I began to lose interest and began dreading it. Then it dawned on me: it wasn’t the walking that drew me to it, it was the solitude! Know thy self!
ora et labora
My mind wanders all the time but I have not yet invented a perpetual motion machine or figured out what dimension my missing socks are in,
Yes. I had many friends who wanted to join me when jogging. I finally learned to simply say to everyone "sorry, I run alone."
A good night's sleep to subconsciously 'think' about the issue -
two cups of coffee, and then a hot shower.....
- Eureka!
“Scientists figure out why “
My wandering-mind wants to know who funded this ‘research’?
A lot of things pop up when I shower with my wife.
My greatest epiphanies to solve complex problems that I had been spending great mental energy on always occur in that time right when I fall asleep in the sliver of space between consciousness and unconsciousness when you are floating between worlds. All of the sudden the answer shocks me awake like a lightening bolt, as the answer is always so stunning in its elegant simplicity
A brisk but fairly brief walk helps me to think - I think getting the blood flowing and maybe increased oxygen from moving about. Maybe a shower in hot water relaxes sore muscles and joints and encourages circulation.
Yep, it happens.
My best thoughts and ideas come while I’m mucking out my horse pens.
Its funny how scooping horseshit, clears your mind of the day’s horseshit.
The shower is to get out of, asap.
If your mind is wandering, lower the temperature.
For mind wandering, hang out with a bore.
Actually, Jonathan Swift had it pegged all along way back when. in “Gulliver’s Travels” Gulliver came on the Houyhnhnms, an intelligent horse race. They had determined that examining the stool of anyone was most illuminating since at that time they were are their most pensive.
Remember 'The Island of Misfit Toys' from Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer?
I have the 'Box of Unmatched Socks' on the floor of my bedroom closet.
Unmatched sock? Toss it in the box.
Every few months sort through the box and mates will be found.
Maybe there is some sort of 'sock cloning' happening in the box.
Dunno...
Might are on the can, not the shower.
Talking a walk in the woods, or watching ducks quack in a pond gives the same result.
The mind is always working in the background. We just have to give it some space so it can figure things out.
