OMG. I’m so sorry to hear that. Have they found the dogs owners, yet? They need to face prison. There was a Hispanic elderly, man that also was killed two months ago just walking to the corner store, and was mauled by several of them.

The dogs were removed and the owner charged.

Oh, I see still nothing reported on your friend from the media. All too common in many places. I knew someone who lived out in a rural area, and complaining about the pitbulls did no good, because the sheriff was/is friends with the family.

Haven’t heard yet if the sheriff has charged the owners or not — my friend called them though, inquiring.

I’m glad they were able to charge the owners at the link you sent. It’ll keep happening until the breed is eradicated, though. And those in the story you linked were “mixes” — I’ve noticed if you ask an owner about the breed of their dog that resembles a pit, they’ll usually say “it’s a mix”, meaning it’s not a pure pit, so the implication is: nothing to worry about (!!!).

Even mixes can be dangerous.

Cat saves four year old.

The owner of that dog said they didn’t want him, anymore, so he was euthanized.

My husband walks in this neighborhood every day, as do many neighbors. I told DH he needs to carry mace, pepper spray, or something else when he walks. He has a sense of security because the subdivision is pretty upscale where people contain their dogs. Also, some have those invisible fences for their dogs. But they can fail. Strays could come in.

It’s nuts to walk alone considering the possibilities. And a couple days of watching true crime can be a real eye opener. How many bad outcomes are there for lone runners and walkers?

Yes! We must defend ourselves.

I found out from my friend that lost his neighbor, in TN if you are at a public dog park, and one of the pits attacks your dog, you’re not allowed to use your carry-permit gun to shoot the pit bull. You are only allowed to shoot if your own life is in jeopardy (not sure about another person, but that’s probably okay to shoot in that circumstance). So basically you have to get between the pit and whatever dog it’s mauling in order to have legal pretext to shoot.

Pit bulls and “mixes” need to be banned from dog parks (and they are probably, if you interpret “vicious dogs” as posted on most dog park signs at their entrances — but most pit owners don’t think their dogs are “vicious”).

It’s too risky for the public and the other dogs to allow this breed to mingle with the rest of us.

“You are only allowed to shoot if your own life is in jeopardy”

In which case, anyone would be stupid not to have at the ready a darn good story, and hope other owners nearby would support you. The pit owner might object, but it would be his word against yours.

Exactly. A friend had one, swore only the ones that were trained to be aggressive attacked and that he raised his from a put to be loving.

Then it attacked a little girl, bit her in the face.

He said the dog just went off, would not heed his commands. he had to pull the dog off.

He now says nobody should own a pit bull.

Didn’t even need to read to see what kind of dog was responsible. So sad. Dogs like that should never be allowed to be pets— and not just with kids
