Eating cold-water fish and other sources of omega-3 fatty acids may preserve brain health and enhance cognition in middle age, new evidence indicates.
Having at least some omega-3s in red blood cells was associated with better brain structure and cognitive function among healthy study volunteers in their 40s and 50s.
"The new contribution here is that, even at younger ages, if you have a diet that includes some omega-3 fatty acids, you are already protecting your brain for most of the indicators of brain aging that we see at middle age," said Claudia Satizabal, Ph.D.
The study of 2,183 participants found that:
- Higher omega-3 index was associated with larger hippocampal volumes. - - The hippocampus, a structure in the brain, plays a major role in learning and memory. - Consuming more omega-3s was associated with better abstract reasoning, or the ability to understand complex concepts using logical thinking. - APOE4 carriers with a higher omega-3 index had less small-vessel disease. The APOE4 gene is associated with cardiovascular disease and vascular dementia.
Researchers used a technique called gas chromatography to measure docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) concentrations from red blood cells. The omega-3 index was calculated as DHA plus EPA.
The team divided participants into those who had very little omega-3 red blood cell concentration and those who had at least a little and more. "We saw the worst outcomes in the people who had the lowest consumption of omega-3s," Satizabal said. "So, that is something interesting. Although the more omega-3 the more benefits for the brain, you just need to eat some to see benefits."
It's encouraging that DHA and EPA also protected APOE4 carriers' brain health. "It's genetics, so you can't change it," Melo van Lent said, referring to the vulnerability of this risk group.

I heard through the grapevines that Zeta-9 can temporarily allow someone with advanced Alzheimers/dementia to sct somewhat normal for up to 6 hours, but it can only be administered once every 7 days or there are severe side effects.
Can Omega-3 supplement users here please chime in with their favorite label of O3? Thanks!!
Olive oil, sardines.
We personally use the Walmart “Spring Valley Maximum Care Omega-3 2000 mg per serving” in the 180 softgel version, which makes a softgel under 9 cents each.
We take two per day, providing 2,000 mg of Omega-3 (EPA and DHA) fats.
ConsumerLab.com has tested it and said it passed all quality checks, and it appears the cheapest source for the fats.

Go to the source....I am in my 3rd bottle of Arctic Krill Oil

Preserve brain health and enhance cognition in old age also
At 80 years am still at the gym 3 times a week...all my weights at 100lbs or more.
My 40 year old truck the gauges console disintegrated over time.
So I replaced it and a new printed circuit board.
Had to identify 2 rows of 7..that is 14 wires on the plug.... where they go and what function served.
Only mistake I made was in wiring the brake light to the +5V gauges line instead of +12 volts...soon fixed that.
Love that wiring story! Thanks for the health tips!
If the omega 6 isn’t reduced, it’s all for naught.
But don’t worry: The governing is here to help.
“Fish”, cooked low & slow.
All supplements are total junk.
Definitely the Omega-6 fats need to be reduced.
Pro-inflammatory fats need to be greatly limited.
An 8 ounce salmon steak, once a week.
87 and still sharp.
Not true. Absorption can be an issue, but if you know what you’re doing, it can work.
Correction:
but if you know what you’re doing, blindly trust junk manufacturers of supplements in a wholly-unregulated market it can work.
If there's a manufacturer out there with certified, bioavailable content absent mercury & Fukushima radioactive nuclides, I can't find it.
Desire for health is one thing; false hope is another altogether.
The best!
LOL. You aren’t looking.
I use Carlson or Lysi.
I rotate between “Fish Oil” and “Cod Liver Oil”.
I take EPA only Omega (DHA free) In prescription form (RX Vescepa) it has proven heart benefits unlike OTC fish pills which are mixed DHA / EPA. With prolonged use Vescepa actually removes preexisting arterial plaque. I doubt my Dr. will prescribe Vescepa so I take 3gm a day of either OTC Omegavia EPA only or Carlson EPA elite Gems. If nothing else it has lowered my trigs 25%.
