Although most San Diegans would say tacos are the region’s most popular food, a recent national study ranked San Diego only eighth on its taco passion list.
The list’s top 10 cities are: Austin, followed by San Jose, San Antonio, Oklahoma City, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Houston, San Diego, Phoenix and Riverside.
According to the data-driven study published by Clever Real Estate on Sept. 29, San Diego fell far behind seven other cities based on the percentage of revenue each city’s restaurants chalked up to taco sales, among many other factors.

amen!
Closer to the border the better the tacos. Ask Jill Biden.
Surprisingly, imo, Phoenix is overrated. I’ve had better tacos in Kansas City.
The best tacos I’ve ever eaten were served to me by a woman who operated a small taco stand from under a stairway in Guadalajara. Nothing since has even come close.
AZ in general has crap mex food

I have worked and traveled all across mexico from baja to colima, michoacan, oaxaca, puebla, jalisco, DF, veracruz, nuevo leon, campeche, yucatan, san luis potosi, chiapas, and the list goes on and on.
Sorry to say, with the exception of places like popos tacos in monterrey, fish tacos in san felipe, arrachera in Jalisco, and ceviche anywhere on the pacific coast south of Sinaloa..American mexican food in So Cal, Texas, and New Mexico is far better than anywhere in mexico. I am very sad to say there is not a single good mexican restaurant here in Reno, I swear they all use the exact same bland and tasteless recipes. There is a place in San Diego I absolutely love, but can never remember the name of, but I always stop there whenever I have to visit our imperial valley plant.
My mid-western brother-in-law visited LA and we ordered tacos. I was astonished to see him pick up his fork to eat it.
Demonstration ensued.
(On the other side of the world, best Thai food was in Tel Aviv at another "little hole-in-the-wall" called: Thai Chic")
I’ve had good Mexican food in Oklahoma, Texas and California.
But the best I ever had was in San Diego.

In York, we have some excellent local ma & pa Burrito shops, and all their Mex-Tex food is great.
“ AZ in general has crap mex food”
That maybe true in general but there are some good ones too. Tacos Tijuana for example. Agree SD has some of the best tacos anywhere. I have never been disappointed.
SD is the very best of baja
