A friend at work has a daughter with “his girl.” He just moved in with her.
I asked him today when he’s going to marry her. He said It’s coming. I hope he does. He seems to be a good dad and as a black man, a wedding ring is a great example to other men.

Sadly, a married black couple is a rarity. I had the same conversation with another friend. I asked why he didn’t wear a ring. He said they decided they don’t need external symbols to show their dedication.
I said that’s true, but with the lack of stable families in the black community, your wedding ring is an example to others.
I haven’t seen him since that conversation but I he he’s wearing a ring.

I was listening to a heart broken black man in the next cube at work explain to another black man his situation. He had a daughter with a woman who wouldn’t marry him. She had other children by other men, no two the same. He had done everything he could for his daughter and had just found out that at 14 she had just gotten pregnant by a (insert some nasty langue here) 19-year-old man who had run off to another state. He was heartbroken. Then he said, “What could I expect? Her mother never got married. She has sisters who had children and never got married. I can’t do a damned thing about any of it.”
