MECKLENBURG COUNTY, N.C. — The Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office has announced that it will no longer be pulling over drivers for non-moving violations.
Deputies said they will not be stopping drivers for things like inspection violations, driving with a revoked license, having window tinting that’s too dark or having a taillight out.
The sheriff’s office said this change in policy is part of an effort to address racial inequality that they said is apparent in traffic stops.
Channel 9′s Glenn Counts spoke with a community activist who is applauding this decision. Robert Dawkins, with Action NC, said officers used minor violations to profile people of color. He also said the previous policy was a heavy financial blow for lower-income citizens.
“A person that didn’t have the money this month to go and get their tags now has a harder barrier to go and get their tag, because they either had to go get arrested, paid their fine, pay the court cost and then eventually get it done,” Dawkins told Counts.
Many police reformers said they also support the change because they feel agencies often use the current standard to unfairly target minority communities.
“I’ve been in a situation where I’ve been harassed like that by the police. I’ve been pulled over about dumb things,” motorist Markish Johnson said.
Dawkins said his organization has been pushing the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department to make this change for years. He said now that the sheriff’s office has made this move, he hopes the police department will follow suit.
The sheriff’s office said stops for serious moving violations that threaten others will still be made. And if you are stopped for something like speeding and they notice that your headlight is out, you can still be cited.
Very few pocs where I live. Plenty of broken taillights, etc though. Lol.
I was once stopped by the officer because of my stop light did not work.
I was not aware of it, and I could go like that for a while.
I got warning in very professional way, went on and fixed it.
No problem!
Why is this bad?
Are sheriffs in NC elected or appointed? It sounds like the good citizens of Mecklenburg County have voted themselves some nifty insurance premium increases.
DemWit stupidity, no longer enforcing the law.
DemWit max stupidity, announcing that to the public.
I had to recheck that this story was no from the bee.
Up until the early 90s Charlotte was ok.
And look, is shooting a gun sideways out of a moving car really that dangerous?
Remember that a lot of lesser traffic offenses are strictly money making rackets by local governments. Think the chaos that are red light cameras.
Lesser offenses take away from the police doing more important work. However, policing the real stuff *costs* money.
There was a Sheriff in Florida who noted that a high percentage of drivers in the state did not have a valid license to drive. And there were so many serious offenses out there, especially DUI, that risked people’s lives, that it was stupid to arrest a good driver with no license, instead of dangerous ones with a valid license.
A loud chorus then told him to shut up.
Our Democrat Mecklenburg County Sheriff doing what Democrat Sheriffs do. He also does not cooperate with the Feds on immigration...not that that’s an issue for the Feds anymore.
I do have to say though...I rarely, very rarely see a Sheriff’s Deputy with anybody pulled over. They mostly serve eviction notices and slow-walk CCW permit approvals.
“Charlotte NC is a cesspool of woke liberals. It is disgusting to see what this once great city was.”
True dat. I live here, can’t wait to get the hay out of here. With 2 out of 3 voters having voted for Biden, I feel surrounded by the enemy.
The sheriff’s office said this change in policy is part of an effort to address racial inequality that they said is apparent in traffic stops.
Translation: The sheriff is saying that black people are the ones who commit these violations most, so enforcing the regulations is discriminatory. If I were a law abiding black, I'd be fuming about that.
Elected.
Just make sure he's DEAD...otherwise you' pay for his lifetime care, instead of a cheaper one-time penalty.
(Is the < /sarc > tag really necesary?)
From what I can see of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office they ought to cut out the donuts for breakfast and pizza for lunch. It’s a wonder some of them can get behind the wheel.
I’ve had that happen late at night and the pedestrian is dressed in black with a black hoodie on.
Maybe PoC should get their cars inspected, keep up with registrations, fix broken taillights and pretty much just obey the law. Apparently, that’s too much to ask.
I am in Lake Wylie.
