In Ashikaga Flower Park there is a tree called the
“Great Wisteria.” The tree is over 150 years old
and its three large trellises are spread out
to cover over 600 tatami mats or more than
1000 square meters.

I love Wisterias. The hanging flowers of lavender or white.
The vigorous and sturdy trunks.
Some of these trees look like a giant version of Bonsai, that small tree known for it’s gnarly, twisted trunks and delicate foilage.

I wonder how many hundreds of years old that thing is?
Friends of mine in Virginia had a wisteria that was
supposedly 100 years old - and it was 1/50th the size
of this monstrous thing.

The plant is not only beautiful, the fragrance is spectacular.
Once planted, it takes years for it to finally bloom. (3 years for us)
Bees love the necter and while blooming they will swarm the plant

One other fact, snakes hide in the under brush of the lowered
limbs. A NOT SO WELCOMED GUEST!

My maternal family home where I spent most of my youth had a large wisterias arbor about 75-100 feet from the house that was probably 50-75 years old. The thing I remember most was that at a certain time of the year the pods would crack open at night. They sounded like pistol shots and would wake my brother and me up. Alas, about half the property was taken by the Capital Belt Way and the rest turned into a county park. The house, barns, arbor are now long gone.
