What happened to cause leaks in Russia’s Nord Stream 1 and 2, designed to send gas to Germany? The speculation runs from rational to delusional.

There’s always some mystery in the news that provides a blank page for fantasy thinking. This week’s mystery has initiated a storm of speculation: What happened to cause leaks in Russia’s Nord Stream 1 and 2, designed to send gas to Germany? The speculation runs from rational to delusional.

A good example of more rational speculation is by Jed Babbin at the Spectator: He thinks Russia is the most likely suspect:

Germany, Sweden, the United States, and other NATO nations would not have attacked the pipelines. There has been some speculation among U.S. conservatives that we were responsible for the pipeline attacks. That’s clearly wrong for two reasons.

First, we have no motive for doing so, despite President Joe Biden’s February statement claiming: “If Russia invades Ukraine… there will be no longer a Nord Stream 2. We will bring an end to it.”

Destroying Nord Stream 2 only hurts our European allies. There’s no reason to do so.

Second, Biden is too gun-shy to order any such strike. He and Secretary of State Antony Blinken would certainly consult with Germany and France before doing so, and they would have vetoed the move.

We may never know which nation did it, but Russia is -- despite its protestations -- the most likely suspect.

In one sense I think he's correct. In another, I think he's wrong.

SNIP

A blogger named LawDog with pipeline experience sets out a very plausible scenario to me:

Two explosions, 17 hours apart. No military is going to arrange for two pipes in the same general area to be destroyed 17 hours apart.

Very interesting article. Thanks for posting. The author makes a good argument. He says that the pipelines most likely failed due to simple incompetence on the part of Russian maintenance crews.

Very possible. But not very exciting. Stories of SEALS and submarines are far more captivating.

I wonder if it might be certain elements in Russian military who are not pleased with Putin regime. Therefore, an unofficial Russian operation.

Well there you go. When you have a plentiful supply of something you find all sorts of ways to use it. Russia has a lot of incompetence! Some general probably decided to put it to good use, with the end goal being Putin's retirement.

Before you overthrow an autocracy you have to do some destabilization.

Don’t worry. The new GOP Congress will step up and write letters to the DOJ encouraging Garland to prosecute the Deep State criminals.

Honest.

And therein lies the speculation. Knee jerked the withdrawal, shut down the energy industry... hardly gun-shy... hell that delawarean cowboy points his finger pistol like and pretends he’s cranking out shots... or racking shells into a pump action shotgun Bam Bam. That “too shy” dood?

If you wanted to force EuropeOns to stop using oil and natural gas, a good way would be to destroy its availability. This would be an excuse for them to “go green” and expand the use of unreliable wind and solar. Blowing up the Nordstream pipelines would be the easiest way to force this transition. Who would be the most in favor of this besides the wind and solar industries? Virtually all of the Euro Govts, the World Economic Forum, and certainly the Biden Regime. The same Biden Regime that is purposely reducing the availability of oil and gas production in the U.S., emptying our Strategic Petroleum Reserve, AND has made open threats against the Nordstream pipeline. If it’s true that the The U.S. and Nato see the shutdown of Nordstream as a benefit, blowing up the pipeline prevents the Russians from starting it up again in the near future. That allows them to shift the blame to Russia for European suffering this winter.

“Second, Biden is too gun-shy to order any such strike. He and Secretary of State Antony Blinken would certainly consult with Germany and France before doing so, and they would have vetoed the move.”

Biden is the figurehead behind the largest organized electoral theft in U.S. history. "The Big Guy" used his influence to run an organized crime family that made millions, if not billions, from his political influence. He is a gambler who is arrogant enough to think he won't get caught because he controls the right people. If his brother and his son made timely investments in LNG, he doesn't care what the French or the Germans think. He simply calculated that Putin won't start a nuclear war over a pipeline while he is losing a war in Ukraine. His generals aren't stupid enough to order a first nuclear strike against a NATO nation, and certainly not the U.S. In short, Biden is anything but gun-shy.
