WASHINGTON, Sunday, Sept. 28.
Statements are rife that the rebel army is still on the south bank of the Potomac. The most reliable information, however, shows the bulk of their force to be at Winchester, which is designed to be both a base and a nucleus of operations. It is highly probable that sufficient troops are left near the Potomac to defend the fords and ferries, and to create the impression that the bulk of their army is still there. They undoubtedly wish to detain Gen. MCCLELLAN's army on the north bank of the river, fearing that some movement will be made to cut off communication with Richmond.
W.T. DENNIS, Military Agent of Indiana returned from Sharpsburgh on Saturday, and furnishes some valuable information regarding the late battle there. He gives the following summary from the official reports of the losses in the Indiana regiments engaged.
SEVENTH -- Killed, six privates. Wounded, four officers, thirty-five privates.
FOURTEENTH -- Killed, two officers, twenty-eight privates. Wounded, ten officers, one hundred and forty-eight privates.
NINETEENTH -- Killed, one officer, eight privates. Wounded, one officer, seventy-one privates.
TWENTY-SEVENTH -- Killed, one officer, thirteen privates. Wounded, five officers, one hundred and eighty-three privates.
FIRST CAVALY -- Killed, one private. Wounded, three privates.
THIRD CAVALRY -- Killed, four privates; wounded, five privates.
Mr. DENNIS estimates our aggregate losses at Sharpsburgh at a still lower figure than Surgeon-Gen. HAMMOND. He agrees in the opinion that the rebels suffered much more severely, owing to the superiority of the Union troops in vigor, and the quality of their arms. He has procured and sent forward two thousand blankets for the use of the Indiana troops there.

In the sort of irony our FRiends like jeffersondem thrive on, a prime motive for the good citizens of New Orleans to swear allegiance to the USA is so that they can keep their slaves, at least for the time being.
Those remaining loyal to the Confederacy will have their "contraband" slaves confiscated, per Union law.
