The unidentified winners of an auction for over 100 green plastic Hardigg rifle shipping and storage cases from a Georgia-based online surplus company cracked open one to find at least a dozen M16s inside, reports KTRK in Houston. In what was probably the right move from a legal standpoint but what will be an epic letdown for many, they called the ATF who "quickly" arrived to pick up the guns.

I’d at least demand just compensation from the government for seizure of my legal property. When you make the purchase, contractually you are the legal owner of all the contents. Therefore, the government needs to pay up for the seizure.

I would have destroyed the receivers and sold the parts kits. Then legal.

If it was a setup, no amount of ATF-calling would have helped them. The ATF would have swooped in with red-hot barrels and TV news crews.

This brings to mind Cosco Shipping, Long Beach, CA (sometime in the 1990s) when thousands of Chinese automatic rifles were discovered. Of course, nothing came of it.
Maybe, maybe not.
But the ATF did go fishing by tossing the rest of their stuff.
So at the least it was a “foot in the door” to snoop and steal from the couple during an “investigation”.

A lot more likely that the Federal Bureau of Incitement will just give them away free, to some poor red-hat-wearing "white supremacist militia members" somewhere, who can't tell an M16 from a Winchester 94...

If that guy had a pricey lawyer on retainer, he might have been able to put the Deuces in some sort of escrow situation, and gotten the paperwork through to take legal possession, but it would probably take years and many thousands of dollars. It would have at least been as likely that he'd have years of litigation invested and end up meeting the wrong judge who just said "nope" and confiscated the weapons without compensation.
If he took one to the range, even if it were a private range, it would get a heap of attention. Trying to get ammo could get a heap of attention. Attempting to offload, even to a private collector... attention of the worst kind. I don't necessarily agree with the rules, but they are what they are. What's the value in having a firearm that would draw that much attention if you attempt to use it or sell it?
