SAN DIEGO, CA / ACCESSWIRE / September 26, 2022 / The Spy Motorcycle - The World's first electric motorcycle with built in solar panels, goes on sale today. The Spy Motorcycle looks straight out of a futuristic sci-fi movie, with a 125 mile range on a single charge, 40mph top speed, and six hour charging time. The electric motorcycle has built in solar panels that connect directly to the battery, allowing the owner to charge the battery by letting it sit outside in the sun.

Tesla should sue for that hyperbolic comparison!

“125 mile range on a single charge, 40mph top speed, and six hour charging time”.
An utterly useless gimmick to rip off the gullible.
At only 40 MPH I could not even legally drive into my nearest town.
Only useful within the confines of a gated community.
I predict a very short life for this company.

There is no such things as “EV’s”. They are 95% fueled by Nat Gas or coal.

40 mph top speed

That’s not a motorcycle. Its a scooter. I do not understand why this is a story. Is it because it has solar panels?

They have been racing EV bikes at the Isle of Mann TT races since 2010.

Gas vs. electric

“The EV bikes are also slower than the gas superbikes, but not by much. The fastest gas bikes do about a 130mph lap, while the EV bikes manage 120mph laps. The EV bikes are faster than the gas “lightweight” and “sidecar” series (*page has not yet been updated with this year’s EV record). The gas races are 4 laps long, the EV race is 1 lap long.

Gas engines still do hold advantages at extremely high speeds and can be built lighter than an EV motor + battery combo due to the high energy density of gasoline. The gas superbikes weigh about 80kg less than the winning Shinden Hachi, though both put out around the same amount of horsepower. This significant weight difference (EV bikes are about 50% heavier) makes for a big gap in lap times.

But battery tech improves by 5-10% per year and has been consistently doing so for decades. This was reflected in the rapidly dropping lap times of EV bikes until recently. As energy density improves, the TT Zero will be able to reach for faster speeds with lighter bikes or be able to start running multiple-lap races instead of the current single hot lap.
Times are tumbling

What’s interesting about this speed difference is how quickly it has closed. In the inaugural TT Zero race in 2010, the fastest lap was 96.82mph (155.8km/h) and 23:22.89. For the first several years of the competition, MotoCzysz dominated the races and managed to get up to 109.675mph (176.5 km/h) in 2013.

Team Mugen was close behind them, though, and soon took the reins. In 2014 they won the race and have won every year since. In 2015 they reached 119.279mph (192km/h), and speeds have plateaued a little bit since then, compared to the previous rapid development.”

One reason for this stagnation is due to the lack of competition. MotoCzysz pulled out of the race in 2014 after its founder was diagnosed with cancer and other teams have generally not had significant enough support to field a competitive bike. This has left Mugen alone at the top of the pack on their Shinden Hachi bike. When you’re assured of winning, it’s often hard to push yourself to go much faster.

“Our goal is to give the average person a safe, easy way to ride around their neighborhood and city without having to spend exorbitant amounts of money on gas...”

But there are plenty of battery-boosted bicycles already in circulation - they have been popular among yuppies for a couple years already. I was followed around town by one and it kept up with me going 35. So I don’t see what need this toy is fulfilling.

Nice Christmas present for the kiddies though ...

With those little wheels, I immediately thought of the little Honda 70 I had as a kid.

80 mph would be good enough to travel around all roads in a city. 40 is too slow.

Despise meaningless clickbait links to “Tesla” when it ain’t Tesla.

If it’s not Tesla, it’s not Tesla.

Elon made clear “no Tesla motorcycle.” This is a motorcycle.
Tesla cars feature great acceleration and moderately high top speeds (~2x fastest speed limit posted). This has a top speed of ... 40 MPH? AYFKM?
Tesla does suggest Cybertruck might have a solar tonneau option as backup power, but the cars completely don’t. This might have an integrated panel, but don’t expect* anything more than getting a few blocks to an outlet.
Nothing “Tesla of motorcycles” about it.

Let the brand be its own brand.

(* - before bashing it, remember gas cars cannot self-trickle-fill. At least this can get _some_ distance by just sitting there in the sun.)

Those solar panels need to deploy like the wings on star-wars X-wing.
Then it will look really cool at its fast jog pace......

40MPH is not a motorcycle.
Its a scooter with bigger wheels.

“40mph top speed.

How fast up hills?”

Bet that 40 MPH is DOWNHILL.

I’ve seen wheelchairs that can do 40mph.

OMG I just realized the “solar panels that connect directly to the battery” are 3-4 dinky little credit-card-sized things that produce almost no relevant power, being too small and too misdirected to matter. Total joke of a claim.

You can buy a Honda Grom that gets 166 mpg and has a top speed of 55 mph for half the price.
