A US Vela Hotel satellite captured the Vela Incident, also known as the South Atlantic Flash on September 22, 1979. The incident was a double flash of light that beamed off Antarctica near the Prince Edward Islands. To date, there is no official account of what caused the double flash leading to several hypotheses being advanced on the probable cause. Some sources claim that the incident was characteristic of a nuclear test while others believe that the flash was as a result of an aging satellite generating electrical signals. Other sources also claim that the lights were as a result of a meteor hitting a Vela satellite. Although investigations remain classified, investigators ruled out an explosion.

I remember the theories that this was a joint South African and Israeli venture to detonate a nuclear weapon.
I thought the South Africans confirmed that.
I thought they denied it.
I had a Velveeta Incident once....................
Probably will never know.
Heh
It was horrendous!..........................
Fission-fusion detonation.
That’s why Vela Hotel caught it
Small test.
Well, maybe those crazy kids at the Mossad might have the answer?
Go double on the Rotel but first add a half cup or cup of Vitamin D whole milk to the melting Velveeta
I tend to agree with those theories South Africa and Israel felt squeezed by the same enemies as in the USSR and Communism aligned with the PLO and the ANC and so on.
It made perfect sense for Israel led by Menachem Begin and John Vorster’s South Africa to have collaborated.
No need to Winston Smith this item from history.
Ummm... like 10,000 miles away?
Or does princy have more than one island in the world...
If that melted hot Velveeta gets on you, it will take your skin off!.................
Is that like a String Cheese Incident?
Yes, “Prince Edward Island” (singular) is in Canada, but the “Prince Edwards Islands” (plural) are near Antarctica.
I was active at that time, rumors were that India had done their first nuc test.
I don’t know, I’ve never eaten String Cheese...............
You are both right.
ID’d (properly) as a nuclear weapon detonation, both nations denied any involvement.
About 20- years later, extensive regime change in South Africa led to the release of some records corroborating what the CIA told Jimmah Cahtah... Nuclear weapons test, South Africa had to be involved and that there was ‘credible’ evidence of Israeli involvement.
There has been no official statement of ‘yeah it was our nuke’ from either country, but the story changed from “NO, WE DID NOT!!!” to “no comment” in the mid-90’s among the sort of “common knowledge” that the two countries violated about 3 treaties each with this BS’ery...
