Do sleep timing and duration affect dementia risk? (>8 hrs = 69% higher risk)
Medical Xpress / Wiley / Journal of the American Geriatrics Society ^ | Sept. 21, 2022 | Rui Liu MD et al

New research published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society suggests that the time people go to bed and the amount of time they sleep may affect their risk of developing dementia.

In the study of 1,982 older adults in China who were free of dementia at the start of the study, 97 participants were diagnosed with dementia during an average follow-up of 3.7 years.

Risk of dementia was 69% higher in those who slept for more than 8 hours (versus 7-8 hours) and 2-times higher for those who went to bed before 9 PM (versus 10 PM or later).

"This suggests that cognitive function should be monitored in older adults who report prolonged time in bed and advanced sleep timing," the authors wrote.

Life’s too short to spend that much time in bed.

Exactly. If I could get by on 2 hours of sleep each night, I would be elated. Man, could I get stuff done.

Right now, 6½ hours is optimal for me.

Same here, though I don’t mind a brief nap on a hot afternoon. I suspect that idleness may well correlate with developing dementia, but it’s certainly not the sole cause.

Yes it seems especially lately that there’s just not enough hours in the day to get done what I want or need to do. For a couple years now I wake after 6 hours. For a while it was fine but lately I feel I need more and I wish I could get like you just that half hour more lol

Depends on what you're paying for.

I'm up at 7 AM and often work until after midnight. My wife gets up at 5:45 AM for a 7 AM shift dispatching police/fire/EMS. The offset avoids clashing with access to the shower and kitchen. I will like more than 5 hours sleep, but it doesn't happen often. 8 hours happens a few days each year.

Check for sleep apnea. The apnea intrupts sleep because you stop breathing and makes you sleep longer. On top of that your blood O2 drops way down which accelerates dementia.

I clearly have some sleep apnea issues. I have a Fitbit Charge4 to monitor my sleep SP02. I've found that 1000 mg of vitamin C and a 1000 mg chaga tablet at bedtime will boost my SP02 to 94 to 97 percent. If I skip that part of my bedtime preps, the sleeping SP02 runs 91 to 93 percent. The Charge 4 also tracks sleep phase including awake, rem, light, deep. A sleep quality metric is calculated. The recorded values of sleep start/end time are pretty accurate. The resting heart rate is also calculated along with heart rate variability and breathing rates. Useful inputs.

My mornings have changed significantly since the end of August. A new Dachshund puppy joined our "pack". I get up, shower, dress and take the puppy out back to potty on the lawn. She comes back inside and has breakfast in the kitchen as I feed the Maine Coon cat and Jack/Rat Terrier. The puppy goes back up to her crate with fresh food/water/bed. At that point I'm free to eat my breakfast and head to my desk for work. A coffee break at 10 AM includes getting the puppy out back for a run/potty break. She's 10 weeks old now, so she's getting a little more freedom to run in the kitchen and dashes back into the house from the yard. She is really fast.

There are 7 dogs and two cats in the house at present. The puppy is dog #7. At 66, she will be my last puppy. It is possible she will outlive me.

It’s prostate cancer. Maybe prostRate cancer is what you get from sleeping too much :).

Sleep apnea is positively correlated with dementia.

Many untreated and/or undiagnosed apneic individuals sleep longer because their sleep is fragmented and non-restorative.

Get a sleep study, my good FRiends! Keep your precious cognitive abilities and memory.

Sleep apnea is treatable without drugs, and the cpap/apap is much easier to adapt to than some claim.

My sleep is fragmented because of having to go pee every 90 minutes or sometimes 3 hours. And sometimes stay awake for 1.5 hours. So maybe nine hours sleep over 11 hours or so. No prostate problem nor metabolic syndrome. And oxygen sat looks fine. Lots of supplements for all kinds of things.

I will occasionally take a supplement for annoying urge to pee - saw palmetto with pygeum.

Pygeum is the catalyst that make the 1st ingredient more effective. Bottle says 2 pills twice/day (seems excessive!) but I’m a rebel and a miser so I only take 1 pill when the frequency or urgency gets somewhat noticeable.

Bought a ‘6-month’ supply years ago, gave away about half of the unopened bottles and have almost a full bottle left still.

Only side effect is dry mouth when sleeping but I already have/had water bottle on nightstand due to excess snoring. Buy them at: stopagingnow.com
