Senate Democrats are bracing for the possibility for life under a divided government, with President Biden in office and a strong possibility of a Republican-controlled House.
Democrats hope they can retain their majority in the Senate, where a number of political handicappers say the party is favored. That would give Democrats more leverage and congressional support for Biden over the next two years.
But if the House does fall as expected, lawmakers expect partisan gridlock.
Some Democrats are predicting government shutdowns and standoffs over raising the federal debt limit will take center stage.
“If Republicans win control of the House, they will not be able to govern. It’ll be a cascading nightmare of dysfunction and horrible for the country and horrible news for anybody who relies on federal funding,” said Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), a senior member of the Senate Appropriations Committee.
Murphy predicted that if Republicans are in charge of one or both chambers, “it’s probably a series of shutdowns and funding crises.”
“This new breed of Republicans are anarchists. They don’t really believe government should be funding anything,” he added.
Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), the House minority leader who is in line to become Speaker if Republicans win the lower chamber, is more allied with former President Trump than his Senate GOP counterpart, Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.).
McCarthy sided with Trump last year when the former president called on Republicans to block legislation to raise the debt limit, which would have put the nation at risk of default.
**SNIP**
Trump, who retains a strong grip on the Republican base, slammed McConnell for compromising with Democrats, arguing that GOP lawmakers should have sought to paralyze Biden’s agenda.

I just want them to quickly impeach Biden three times.
Since medical science hasn't perfected testicular and spinal transplants for Republicans, there probably won't be much change in the House.
Exactly. The reason the RATS love the GOOBers so much is because they let the RATS run Congress when the RATS win more seats. But what really endears them to the RATS is that they also let the RATS run the joint when the GOOBers win more seats. Nanzi and Chuckey own the House and Senate.
If the GOP fail to pick the right person for Speaker it will be just more of the same
They’ll be just fine. The rinocrats mean the democrats no harm. They’ll have some playtime hearings generating some sound bites where nothing ever happens. Hell, they’ll probably investigate Trump again.
Gosh, how awful. The federal government being more responsible in its spending. That's much preferred to totalitarian Democrat rule.
Not too long ago, The Hill was saying they were going to keep the House.
Now in “The Hill” speak, they are nearly admitting they are going to loose.
Right now, PA is the only Senate seat I am watching.
Turtle is scared!
Probably why he started finally sending funds to AZ.
At least that many.
Good! Cut all the MOOCHERS off! Make 'em work or starve I say.
As far as gridlock, it's a GOOD THING when the Government idiots are too busy fighting amongst themselves that they cannot pass any new laws that restrict our freedoms!
Let 'em fight!
Sen. Chris Murphy (Drama Queen - CT)
Job one. McCarthy better kick off many of the radical Democrats on committees. If he doesn’t do that, he’ll be a disaster. If the Senate Stays democrat, they’ll just appoint judges the whole two years which will screw the country beyond belief. They already appointed more judges than any president in history in the last two years.
As long as the first order of the day is investigating and impeaching the Biden Crime family.
If the Republican don’t get control of the house the voters are as guilty as Biden by allowing him to complete his agenda.
From the speakership Trump could direct the necessary inquests into the Democrat party crimes and collusions. He’d also be 3rd in the line of succession to the presidency and would be in a great position to run in 2024.
That’s why!
After Republicans lost the House majority in the 2018 midterm elections, and GOP Speaker Paul Ryan left office, Jim Jordan ran against Kevin McCarthy for leadership of the GOP minority in the House. McCarthy won in an overwhelming 159 to 43 vote. McCarthy’s leadership of House Republicans has not been challenged since that vote. There is currently no indication Jordan or any other Republican plans to oppose McCarthy for the speakership if they win the majority.
In March of 2022 Trump stated he does not want to be Speaker of the House if Republicans take the majority in the midterms.
If Republicans capture the House and Senate majority expect to see McCarthy as Speaker and McConnell as majority leader. While conservatives may dominate the GOP voter base, GOP voters consistently send moderates to Congress. Moderates do the bidding of the big donors. They are pragmatic politicians, not partisans driven by conservative ideology.
