Daily multivitamin may improve cognition and possibly protect against decline

Could taking a daily multivitamin help maintain cognitive health with aging and possibly prevent cognitive decline? According to new research from Wake Forest University School of Medicine, conducted in collaboration with Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, taking a daily supplement may improve cognition in older adults, but additional studies are needed to confirm these findings before any health recommendations are made. The study also showed that daily use of a cocoa extract supplement does not benefit cognition.

According to the Alzheimer's Association, more than 6.5 million Americans are living with Alzheimer's disease, and 1 in 3 seniors die with the disease or another form of dementia.

The researchers estimated that three years of multivitamin supplementation roughly translated to a 60% slowing of cognitive decline (about 1.8 years). The benefits were relatively more pronounced in participants with significant cardiovascular disease, which is important because these individuals are already at increased risk for cognitive impairment and decline.

A simple multivitamin/multimineral can assure you aren’t missing a key item each day.

The USRDA is the minimum needed to not have expected issues.

Do consider looking over your multis to see if they skip some vitamins or minerals, and see about supplementing just those.

I’d do two a day, just to be sure.
The body won’t keep anything.

I thought fish oil tablets or the regular eating of salmon/ sardines was supposed to do that.
I was hoping this was a valid plan since I like those kind of canned fish.

The Fish Oil capsules gave me a terrifc headache when I bought a jar last year. 20 years in the past, when I used them for a short while, there was no headache at all.
Results can vary once the ‘equipment’ gets old.

Not that I don’t trust our medical experts, but maybe multi-vitamins help cause cognitive decline with all the synthetic ingredients. There are more MV’s being sold than ever and yet the problem keeps getting worse. So the theory is to do the opposite of what they say. And don’t forget, get your safe an effective boosters, too.

I was on a seizure medicine carbamazepine for 20 years, which presumably destroys my body’s Vitamin D, and could be a likely contributor of my having arthritis. If true, that Vitamin D level should have been monitored when I first started it 20 years ago, and it wasn’t.

I think we figured out it would take 27lbs of dark chocolate a day to get the coco flavonoids necessary to match the study. It’s only doable in a pill or powder.

Some vitamins such “A” can accumulate and cause toxic effect in excess. Explorers to poles ran out of food and ate dog’s livers which is very high in vitamin A, and died from toxicity.

The problem with most multivitamins is that theyre crap, or more correctly they just pass through as such because they arent a bio available quality.

For example, the name you most likely think of when someone says multi-vitamin happens to be the lowest grade out there, they just have the biggest advertising budget. Dont buy that brand.

Yep. If you're taking a cheap multivitamin from Target or Walmart, you might want to reconsider.

For example, if you happen to be one of millions of Americans who have a grouping of genetic mutations (and almost everyone has at least one of these mutations), you cannot process B vitamins without folate. Cheap brand multivitamins add synthetic folic acid instead of bioavailable methylated folate. But here's the thing... if you have several of these mutations, folic acid is actually toxic to your body and it builds up in your system, causing a multitude of issues that are factors in an assortment of other diseases (i.e., depression, hypothyroidism, extreme anxiety, high levels of homocysteine leading to cardiac issues, etc.). Not to mention, you can take $$$ worth of B vitamins and your body will just pee them straight out.
