Scientists say the best way to soothe a crying infant is by carrying them on a 5-minute walk
Medical Xpress / Cell Press / Current Biology ^ | Sept. 23, 2022 | Kumi O. Kuroda et al

Most parents have experienced frustration when their infants cry excessively and refuse to sleep. Scientists have found that the best strategy to calm them down is by holding and walking with them for five minutes.

Kuroda and her colleagues have been studying the transport response, an innate reaction seen in many altricial mammals—those whose young are immature and unable to care for themselves—such as mice, dogs, monkeys, and humans. They observed that when these animals pick up their infants and start walking, the bodies of their young tend to become docile and their heart rates slow.

..The team found that when the mother walked while carrying the baby, crying infants calmed down and their heart rates slowed within 30 seconds. A similar calming effect occurred when the infants were placed in a rocking cot, but not when the mother held the baby while sitting or placed the baby in a still crib.

When the mothers tried to put their sleepy babies to bed, more than one-third of the participants became alert again within 20 seconds. The team found that all babies produced physiological responses, including changes in heart rate, that can wake them up the second their bodies detach from their mothers. However, if the infants were asleep for a longer period before being laid down, they were less likely to awaken during the process.

Based on their findings, the team proposes a method for soothing and promoting sleep in crying infants. They recommend that parents hold crying infants and walk with them for five minutes, followed by sitting and holding infants for another five to eight minutes before putting them to bed. The protocol, unlike other popular sleep training approaches such as letting infants cry until they fall asleep themselves, aims to provide an immediate solution for infant crying.

> Car rides work too

29 years ago when my daughter was born, we bought a crib vibrator device (I don't recall the brand name) that had been developed by a father who found that his daughter fell asleep if he drove her around at 55 MPH for a few minutes. So he designed an off-center motor that mimicked the vibrations of his car at that speed, that could be attached to a crib. My wife read about it, we bought one, and we found that it worked great.

Of course, taking my daughter for a ride worked too, but the crib vibrator was much more convenient.

As for walking her around, OF COURSE that works -- every halfway smart parent figures that out pretty soon. A little bounce in the step helps too.

Yep. The grannies in my day were right. Sometimes you have to let the baby cry it out. I had a daughter who was a night owl just like her father’s side of the family and she tended to have the colic

She would sleep all day and then be up all night. I had to have her learn at 8 months to sleep at night which involved a few nights of crying it out.

If you pick up a baby every time it cries/fusses after baby has been changed, fed and burped, you are only training yourself.

I remember seeing a story about the crib vibrator. Mine was older by then but it made great sense to me. Glad to hear it worked

Well, that was three million dollars well spent!

I wonder what the subject of their next study will be: "What is the best method to light a candle?"

My nephew’s baby daughter responded to someone singing “O Holy Night”. She stopped crying immediately and just listened.

the “let them cry it out” school is a influencer to SDS. Nature says, close this one out, it’s not being nutured.

Our dentist suggested a drop of whiskey to the gums when our daughter was teething.

Waaaah, Waaaaah, Waaaaaaahh, Whoa.

Seriously, that’s what she said.

“Got proof of that?”

How about the legions of people being psycho analyzed who have parent issues?
Perhaps something went wrong with their attachment to their parents (attachment works both ways you know)

Basic theory was proved in monkeys (and this experiment has been repeated many times with the same results) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Harlow

If you extent that to humans you have the field of attachment parenting popularized by Sears.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Attachment_parenting

The reverse of which is populized by Dr Spock (not the star trek spock). From his 1976 book...In the 1976 edition, you will find Dr. Spock’s advice concerning sleep training on page 227. It is basically the “cry it out” method. “The cure is simple: put the baby to bed at a reasonable hour, say good night affectionately but firmly, walk out of the room, and don’t go back. BTW, that quote is removed from more recent printings of his book - Dr Spock has apologized for that quote and walked back a good bit of his theory of child rearing that detached parents from their children.

By the way, this “detached” parent is thoughout Dr Spock’s theory on child raising continues throughout his advice- basically parents are to be detached and matter-of-fact with their children. The Spock Method was the most popular method until recently where attachment parenting is now practiced by an increasing amount of younger parents.

Lastly to lighten up such a serious subject, let’s go back to the real Doctor -— Dr Suess! https://cafemom.com/parenting/116937-dr_seuss_has_the_best

All this being said, I have NEVER seen anyone change someone’s mind during an discussion about parenting styles — why? Because people fall into two camps

1) Children are a blessing from God.
or
2) Children are at best a nuisance.

So if Children ARE a blessing from God, How should we treat them? God has entrusted us with these children. How then are we to treat them? Like a LOVING Father does. The Prodigal Son’s father RAN to meet him instead of “Teaching him a lesson”.

Matthew 18:6 (Jesus speaking here)
“If anyone causes one of these little ones—those who believe in me—to stumble, it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.”

Back in the day there was something like paragoric. I think it had opium in it. It was great! I think the baby liked it too.

So how does that answer the question?

You said letting babies cry themselves to sleep was a factor in SDS.

But just letting them cry themselves to sleep is not the same thing as general overall lack of nurture.

FWIW, for infants, there is no point in trying to “train” them to sleep through the night. They need to eat too often.

However, when they are older, and past any health risks of SDS, they need to learn to fall asleep on their own, and yes, often that means letting them throw that temper tantrum for you not giving them what they want.

The big key is learning when the crying is a real need, actual distress, or just a temper tantrum.

You didn’t read the monkey study article, did you?

Monkeys DIED from lack of attachment.

You didn’t read my posts, did you?

I never advocated for abandoning babies or even letting infants cry it out.

There’s a world of difference between lack of attachment from being ignored and letting a toddler pitch a temper tantrum because he’s not getting his way.
