IMPORTANT WAR NEWS: The Invasion of Maryland by the Rebels; Frederick Held by a Heavy Force Under Johnston (9/8/1862)
New York Times - Times Machine ^ | 9/8/1862

WASHINGTON, Saturday, Sept. 6.

Farmers coming in to-day from Montgomery County, Maryland, state that the camp fires of the enemy were plainly visible last night, on the Virginia shore of the Potomac, near Edwards' Ferry and Point of Rocks. The number of fires seem to indicate a larger force than had at first been supposed present. They extended three miles along the river shore from Edwards' Ferry. This might have been a ruse to deceive us in regard to the real number of their forces.

The rebels were heard industriously chopping timber all night, and, as the ferries are guarded by Union troops, it is supposed by our officers that the enemy is constructing rafts on which to cross the river in the night. Five regiments of the enemy made their appearance on the Virginia bank yesterday evening. The party that crossed the river yesterday at Point of Rocks, consisted of a battalion of Louisiana cavalry and Third Virginia battery, of four pieces rifled.

ANOTHER ACCOUNT.

On Friday last a large force of rebel cavalry made its appearance on the Virginia side of the Potomac, opposite Edwards' Ferry, having reached the point by the road from Leesburgh. They endeavored to effect a landing, but were shelled by our troops stationed on the Maryland side and severely repulsed.

At 2 1/2 o'clock, Saturday morning, a second attempt was made to cross the river simultaneously at Edwards', Conrad's Nolan's and Smith's ferries, and proved successful. The rebel force consisted of between two and three regiments of cavalry. As soon as Poolesvllle was invested, our pickets communicated with the troops in the rear, who, being numerically weak, retired. Some fifteen or twenty soldiers of the First Maryland Regiment are missing and supposed to have been captured.

I wish the Times had clarified which Gen. Johnston they were talking about.

There were like 2^2000 General Johnstons in the Confederate army alone!

Wounded men still on the Manassas battlefield? In a real twist for the NYT, the editorial about ironclads advocates peace through strength.

"A Battle at Martinsburgh: Defeat of a Body of Four Hundred Rebel Cavalry – 3"

Odd, but I can't find another reference to this alleged Battle at Martinsburgh (VA) outside this NY Times report.

One back in June and another in 1864. Nothing in Late Aug. to early Sept 1862 that I can see.
