China vows ‘counter-measures’ as US okays $1.1bn Taiwan arms sales

Saturday, 03 September 2022 9:31 AM [ Last Update: Saturday, 03 September 2022 9:33 AM ]

China has warned the US of impending “counter-measures” following the Biden administration’s approval of yet another $1.1 billion in weapons sales to Taiwan.

Beijing was "firmly opposed" to the sales that "severely jeopardize China-US relations and peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait," said spokesman for the Chinese embassy in Washington on Twitter Saturday, demanding that Washington "immediately revoke" the deal.

"The US interferes in China's internal affairs and undermines China's sovereignty and security interests by selling arms to Taiwan," wrote Liu Pengyu in the tweet, insisting that “it sends the wrong signals to 'Taiwan independence' separatist forces and severely jeopardizes China-US relations and peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait."

He further called on Washington to "honor its commitments to the one-China principle" and concluded his series of tweets by reiterating that Taiwan is "an inalienable part of the Chinese territory," vowing that Beijing will "resolutely take legitimate and necessary counter-measures."

Liu's statement came after the Biden administration formally notified Congress on Friday of the proposed weapons sales, which include up to 60 anti-ship missiles and up to 100 air-to-air missiles.

The Biden administration asked Congress to approve more than $1 billion in arms sales to Chinese Taipei (Taiwan), despite China’s objections.

The State Department further claimed in a statement that the sales are in line with a longstanding US policy of providing defensive weapons to the island and boasted that the "swift provision" of such arms as being "essential for Taiwan's security."

Tensions between Washington and Beijing have escalated since US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan last month despite stern warnings to Pelosi by China against making the trip. Beijing then reacted to Pelosi’s move by ordering days' worth of military drills around the island after she had left.

Taiwan, meanwhile, declared on Saturday that it "highly welcomes" the latest arms sales, thanking the US government for "continuing to implement its security commitments to Taiwan."

"In response to China's recent continuous military provocations and unilateral changes in the status quo and creating crises, Taiwan's determination to defend itself is extremely firm," Taiwan's Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

"This batch of arms sales includes a large number of various types of missiles that are needed to strengthen Taiwan's self-defense, which fully demonstrates that the great importance the US government attaches to Taiwan's defense needs, assisting our country to obtain the equipment needed for defense in a timely manner and to enhance our national defense capabilities."

Independent China specialist Andrew Leung says the US has been emboldening separatist forces in Taiwan to stand against China.

China’s embassy in UK condemns ‘irresponsible rhetoric’ over Taiwan

Earlier this week, the Chinese embassy in London also censured what it described as UK’s “irresponsible rhetoric” after British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss summoned its ambassador over Beijing’s actions towards Taiwan.

Truss, who is also the top contender to become Britain’s next prime minister, summoned Ambassador Zheng Zeguang on Wednesday, claiming that China’s “increasingly aggressive behavior” following Pelosi’s visit to the self-ruled territory was threatening peace and stability in the region around Taiwan.

Zheng “firmly rejected & strongly condemned UK side’s irresponsible rhetoric about China’s legitimate & necessary response to US House Speaker’s Taiwan visit” in a meeting with a senior British foreign ministry official, the Chinese embassy said in a Twitter post.

“Taiwan is an inseparable part of China’s territory,” it insisted, adding, “No foreign country, UK included, has the right to meddle with the internal affairs of China.”

I started a thread the other day on an excellent discussion on "How big a price will the US pay over Taiwan? Full Debate by Experts in London studio and some video links, is hosted by George Galloway."

All experts despite being very diverse agreed that these U.S. escalations were going to lead to China invading Taiwan.

I am posting this as an update on the escalations and China's attitude about them.

The present international reality is there is one China and one Taiwan

Like Singapore, Manila, Kuala Lumpur, Vancouver and San Francisco, Taiwan has a large population of ethnic Chinese

If China could afford to invade Taiwan, they would have by now. This is all Chicom bluster.

They’re as broke as Venezuela.

“All experts despite being very diverse agreed that these U.S. escalations were going to lead to China invading Taiwan.”

But did they all agree that if the United States refused to aid Taiwan militarily, then that also would lead to China invading Taiwan?

A nice little war would take a lot of pressure off the current Joe Stolen/”Que mala” Harris regime right now. Probably even better than another COVID scare (or monkeypox, or Ebola, or whatever), except for only little thing.

It wouldn’t stay a “nice little war” for very long. This is not Vietnam or Iraq we are talking about, this is ICBMs and nukes being exchanged, the very thing that kept the world on edge for all the years of the “cold war” between the US and Soviet Union.

The Blunder Bunny in the Oval Office is about to stumble into a hot war, of which we have little chance of being able to remain standing as the conclusion winds down. It won’t be Imperial Japan and Nazi Germany carving up what remains of the US, it will be the butchery of the revitalized Russian Federation taking over the eastern part of that territory once known as most of Canada and the eastern part of the US, and China taking most of the former US territory from the US-Canadian border, east to the Mississippi, and taking a big bite out of northern Mexico, if not the whole country.

The Deep State hadn’t ought to be writing checks with their mouths, that their butts won’t be able to cash.

Taiwan is ordering 29 HIMARS artillery. 29! Never bought HIMARS before. And a huge number of Jave!in anti-tank missiles. The Ukraine War will greatly increase US weapons sales to its allies and to other countries at Russia’s expense.

No, because China has an already published plan (they like long term plans...:-) and it calls for reunification by 2049.

Our brilliant deep state strategists decided to step up the time table.

Taiwan is right across the strait from mainland China. It’s over 4000 miles from Beijing to Guadalcanal. They act just like Japan in the 1930s. They prepare for war and whoever challenges it is called a is a war monger.

10 billion for Ukraine and 1 for Taiwan. Don’t they have this backwards? Maybe Taiwan is not giving the big guy his cut.
Taiwan is much more important to us that the Ukraine.
Imagine what would happen if we are suddenly cut off from Taiwan chip manufacturing. Whether china would win or not is immaterial as we would lose the chips for a long time.

Too bad we don’t have a genius in deal making in office anymore who worked for no salary. We wouldn’t have to send Taiwan anything nor anything to the Ukraine. But apparently we weren’t allowed to have that so now we have a complete utter moron in office who seems more concerned with what ice cream he is getting today than anything else.

In 2004 Jiang Zemin set the year 2020 as the deadline. It looks like China’s deadline is receding into the future.

All this one dimensional thinking. Blame the deep state boogie man for everything. Really? The deep state is evil, corrupt, and destroying our republic. But they do it for their own selfishness and power, not for all the unrelated things that folks attribute to them.

China is a boogie man all on its own. China has had reclamation of Taiwan as a goal for 60 years. Deep state is just one of many puppets to be exploited for that purpose, along with bought politicians. I doubt the deep state wants war with China. They just can’t see beyond their own nose and selfish needs, and could care what the rest of the world pays for their staying on positions of authority.

Similar can be said of Putin and Russia in Ukraine.

Are you aware that the HIMARS we sent Ukraine were taken from active duty special forces Marines and Army troops? And they were pissed.

They won’t be replaced until 2024 and our troops can just do without them until then.

Hmmm...does that give you a clue as to how soon Poland or Taiwan are going to see many of these?

The reason we announced that we would not be sending any more HIMAR launchers to Ukraine this year is because there aren’t any more.

What killed the USSR was the economy together with the military build up. The USSR was not able to compete with high interest in the west which caused their currency to fall in comparison. All imported food was way too expensive. All local food was subsidized. And of course communism causes poor quality manufacturing. Then add in the cost of building and supplying a full standing army in peace time, it was too much.

China has had it easy since the 1990s. Interest rates have steadily declined for thirty years. This allowed them to go into a huge debt. And since the interest rates were near zero, there was no cost. They could over build and also have money left over to build a huge military as well.

But now if America raises rates, China will have to as well to keep their peg. This will slow consumption all over the world as other countries try to keep their pegs or devalue their currency. The Euro is now at par with the dollar. It takes 140 Yen to buy a single dollar. Even gold has dropped to 1720. In march it was over 2040 an ounce.

If we move the short term rates up to 4%, that will add huge pressure on the rest of the world. Everyone will see inflation quickly. And America will find that prices for local goods are too high. But foreign goods will become much cheaper. And if we keep our import tariffs on Chinese goods, we can force American importers to buy everywhere but China.

China is already trying to dominate places like Mexico. Your Mexican Indian trinkets are now made in China. Your car parts from Canada are made in China. China is infiltrating the world. But that at least is harder to do. Its true that China has learned how to control every facet of Chinese life. But doing the same all around the world is tougher to do. And its tougher still in a slower economy and paying 4% interest.

Taiwan will get theirs in 2027. Plenty of time to ramp up production. And unlike the products sent to Ukraine, arms sales are money from another economy entering the U.S. economy in its entirety. Much of the money being sent to Ukraine is actually being spent in U.S. companies, i.e. money moving internally in the U.S. economy.
