1-year-old girl killed by massive hailstone during freak storm
NY Post ^ | August 31, 2022 | Ben Cost

The 20-month-old tot wasn’t the only one impacted by the extreme weather, which meteorological services have described as the worst hail storm in two decades. Another 50 people were reportedly injured by the falling ice with some suffering broken bones, the Independent reported. Meanwhile, one woman remains in the hospital while the local primary care center treated 28 patients for cuts and bruises.

All told, firefighters reportedly fielded more than 40 calls for both “assistance to the injured,” as well as damage to buildings, wiring and other property.

In addition, the humongous hail also reportedly struck branches off trees, smashed bocce-ball-sized holes in car windshields and pounded public squares. In one apocalyptic clip circulating on local media, the ice orbs can be seen creating giant splashes in a pool like frozen depth charges.

The dangerous ice capades may not be over yet, either. According to Murcia Today, several areas of Catalonia remain on high alert for “violent weather,” including “the possibility of hailstones over 2 centimetres, winds of more than 25 metres per second [55 mph], and tornadoes.” Meanwhile, Barcelona is currently on “orange alert,” or major risk, for severe rainfall.

Hailstones are generally products of supercell thunderstorms as their formation requires powerful updrafts that can support their weight with the larger stones needing the stronger updrafts. A six inch (15cm) diameter [close to maximum record] will weigh close on a pound (0.5kg).

Just one reason that all pilots who want to match safe landings to takeoffs, are taught to give t-storms wide berth!

This is sad, but in Boy Scouts leadership warned us to watch out for this.

They said out west it is not unusual for park rangers to find hikers who have been killed by falling hail.

Guess it could happen anywhere.

Mayfest 1995.

Verified at least one person killed by direct contact.

Kitchen worker from Central America. Had never seen a hail storm, went out back and looked up…nailed him right on the forehead.

Pictures at the site of holes punched thru an industrial building’s metal roof shows the impact force. It looks like small bore cannon fire.

I watched several major hailstorm videos where they showed the points on hail as it’s not always round. My gosh these can hurt you. As was explained the speed in which they fall or in s hail storm can truly harm you.

Four paragraphs to find out it was in Spain. That’s journalism?

We had a real bad hail storm come through NW Arkansas about thirty five years ago.
Wife got the kids up and into the hall. I said I don’t think it will be that bad.
At that moment one came through the kitchen window and I got in the hall, fast!

The hail stones were between 3 and 4 inches, oblong. They were composed of small hail stones all frozen together in a big lump. Had to have the house re-roofed.

Wonder what those would do to a solar panel.

I remember 1951, on the High Plains of NE New Mexico.

Dad had a great wheat crop which he planned to harvest the next day.
But the White Harvester beat him to it.
He borrowed money , put in a new crop and....drought. we left the High Plains the next year never to return.

I’m from East Tennessee, 73 years old, and the largest hail I have ever seen was about the size of a penny or maybe a nickel...

A falling acorn hit me on the head over the weekend. It was quite painful.

Can’t recall just when the one came though Fort Smith. It was blowing and beat windows out of buildings and the top and one side of most vehicles. They looked like someone had used a sledge hammer on them.

That was 10 centimeters, ~ 4 inches. Pretty common in the Texas and Oklahoma panhandle areas each spring.

I was lucky once as a kid. Sometimes hail comes with massive rain, thunder and lighting, mud slides and stopped up drains that need to be cleard in the midst of it all if you don’t want your house ruined. I was so mad at my Dad for making me stand with him out in all that to clear drains. Fifty years later it still bugs me to recollect it.
