Monkeypox Cases are Slowing in the U.S. But it's Unclear if Trend Will Last

(CNN) -- The pace of new monkeypox cases reported in some major cities -- and in the US overall -- has started to slow recently, but experts say it's too early to know if the trend will last.

On Friday, US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky said that she is "cautiously optimistic" about the downward trend, but warned that the overall case count is still growing.

Cases reported does NOT equate to the number of cases contracted. It's just the tip of a giant iceberg.

Well, the one thing they have going for them is that monkeypox is not a new disease, and we already have proven effective vaccines that can build immunity to it. Though I’m not sure how effective those vaccines are going to be in a subgroup suffering from high rates of highly immunocompromised individuals.

There’s also the possibly that their intentionally reckless pattern of behavior might increase the possibilities that a new monkeypox variant that can evade the vaccines will emerge.
