A cup of tea just got a bit more relaxing.
Tea can be part of a healthy diet and people who drink tea may even be a little more likely to live longer than those who don't, according to a large study.
Tea contains helpful substances known to reduce inflammation. Past studies in China and Japan, where green tea is popular, suggested health benefits. The new study extends the good news to the U.K.'s favorite drink: black tea.
Scientists from the U.S. National Cancer Institute used a large database project that asked about the tea habits of nearly a half million adults in the United Kingdom, then followed them for up to 14 years. They adjusted for risk factors such as health, socioeconomics, smoking, alcohol intake, diet, age, race and gender.
Higher tea intake—two or more cups daily—was linked to a modest benefit: a 9% to 13% lower risk of death from any cause vs. non-tea drinkers. Tea temperature, or adding milk or sugar, didn't change the results.
The study found the association held up for heart disease deaths, but there was no clear trend for cancer deaths. Researchers weren't sure why, but it's possible there weren't enough cancer deaths for any effect to show up, said Maki Inoue-Choi, who led the study.
A study like this, based on observing people's habits and health, can't prove cause and effect.
"Observational studies like this always raise the question: Is there something else about tea drinkers that makes them healthier?" said Marion Nestle. "I like tea. It's great to drink. But a cautious interpretation seems like a good idea."
There's not enough evidence to advise changing tea habits, said Inoue-Choi.
"If you drink one cup a day already, I think that is good," she said. "And please enjoy your cup of tea."

My mom drank tea every day at both meals and during the day instead of water. She lived to be 93. I’m trying to follow in her footsteps.
the delicate under-sized handle does not allow one to hold the cup with all your fingers
the remedy is to drink your tea from a big coffee cup
I get freeze dried pineapple bits and tart dried cherries and add them to a white tea / black tea blend called Presidential Tea from Capital Teas.
It is very boring to drag my butt to the gym 5 days during the week. I go late in the day after 9PM because I do not want to catch covid. 9 out of 10 times I am the only one there, and I play my dance music to inspire me to do the treadmill. After 20 minutes, I move on to the weight machine and pull light weights. I am not trying to build muscles, and do not want any injury to muscles or tendons or joints.
Yeah, very boring exercise. But without it, I will be a goner in 3 months. No males in my close family ever made it past 75. I am already 82 and feel good enough to make it to 95. So must continue the boring exercise if I want to live a dozen more years IN GOOD HEALTH, WITH MOBILITY.

I’ve done the diet and exercise routine my whole life too, only 60 now but I feel better than ever. 2 gamechangers for me - chiropractic care and Tommy Chong CBD oil, for anyway who wants to dance in their 80’s and 90’s... maybe longer?
Keep up exercise activity, As you get older, it is more and more beneficial.
Buy the real stuff, not watered down flavor crap off the shelves. Of anything!
Yep, sounds good, what does it mix well with?
Black tea, a splash of ginger ale, a dash of peach bitters, and bourbon.
All you really need is bourbon, but if you want to mix it with tea 'n such, there you go.
I'll give it a try, just bought a bottle of Basil Hayden for a friend visit and now I'm forced to finish off the bottle.
