'It feels like enslavement': This working mom owes $240,000 in student loans. Now she's fighting for full cancellation to live her American Dream 'freely.'
Insider via Yahoo ^ | August 28, 2022 | Taylor Ardrey

One of Richelle Brooks' dreams is to send her two children to college without taking out any loans. She knows firsthand how taking out a loan to pursue higher education can amount to crippling debt.

"My daughter wants to be an anesthesiologist. My son wants to be a computer engineer. Two little Black kids want this for their future," Brooks, 35, told Insider. "And this country is telling me it's impossible for me to get them there. It's a terrible, hopeless feeling."

Brooks borrowed $203,000 collectively to attend undergrad, graduate, and doctoral studies. And over the years, has accumulated over $30,000 in interest.

"Yeah, $240,000," Brooks said.

In 2020, she decided to politicize her inability to pay back her loans. Apart of the Debt Collective, she joined a group of strikers called the "Biden Jubilee 100," calling on the president to cancel student debt within the early days of being in office.

Brooks' American dream is simple.

"My hope is that if my student loan debt balance is canceled, I can start saving for them and planning for their future," she said. "But I'm also hoping that we can get a free college education so that I don't have to also worry about how to finance their future either."

Living in California as a single mother is financially taxing, she said. She works as a principal in South Los Angeles, a career which she adores, but she often has to have a side hustle to live comfortably.

With the burden of student loan debt, saving money for the future is not a luxury for many Black borrowers.

I couldn’t find her in the database, but similar jobs in that system are listed around $170,000 pay + benefits.

Correct. She is financially able to, but in her make-believe world, she shouldn’t have to; it would interfere with her so-called lifestyle. A lifestyle so out of whack that even on a nice principal’s salary, she is “forced” to work side gigs to make ends meet.

She's an idiot.

Maybe not.

There's a strong belief that the feds are gonna cancel 10 grand every year.

Especially if the Nov elections goes their way.

Government needs to get out of the student loan business. Let the investors decide if the grades and aptitude are worth investing.

So, basically, you never have to pay it back. Just wait until it goes down to zero.

When we took our mortgage it listed the total interest and principle for the 30 years. Don’t student loans do this or are they variable?

Hello idiots. Sarcazmo here to help you out.

First, CLEP is your friend. You can do a ton of them for FREE!

Second, there is something called head start or something. You can take classes when you are in high school that count for college.... FOR FREE!

You can get your whole first two years knocked out for free.

You get scholarships for the rest. I suspect you qualify for many... even without the actual scholarship.

But here’s the kicker. All that requires hard work. By the looks of you three, that is not in your lexicon. Robbin’ on the other hand.... oh yeah, that’s what you were talking about.

Why does someone who borrowed $200,000 think that they deserve different and better treatment than someone who paid $200,000 for college out of their own money?

If the taxpayers are going to pay her $200,000 they should also refund the $200,000 spent by people who paid their own way in college.

Do you want to get paid? Are your son & daughter going to want to get paid? Why should that apply only to you and not to every taxpayer? On what basis do you get to cut the line?

Somebody shackled her in chains and threatened to kill her whole family if she didn’t sign for these student loans. Snot her fault.

I knew it! Only a matter of time before the DemoMarxists turned this into a race issue! Of course! Of course! And notice how there is not one mention in this article, not ONE that questions the extreme price gouging of tuition by these universities and why the Presidents of them make multi-million dollar salaries. Because they are nothing but Marxist indoctrination mills today and very valuable to the DemoMarxist party so the scam is allowed to continue.
