NEW-ORLEANS AND KEY WEST: The Effects of the Battle of Baton Rouge Upon the People of New-Orleans (8/26/1862)
New York Times - Times Machine ^ | 8/26/1862

Posted on 08/26/2022 4:56:04 AM PDT by Homer_J_Simpson

The steamship St. Mary, WM. H. TALBOT, Commander, which left New-Orleans on Sunday, Aug. 17, at 10 A.M., arrived at this port yesterday afternoon. She brings fifty-six passengers from New-Orleans, and a large cargo, consisting of 800 hogsheads of sugar and sundry cases.

The steamship Marion also arrived yesterday from New-Orleans on the 17th, and Key West on the 21st.

The health of New-Orleans was good. Weather extremely warm.

The Marion brings quite a large quantity of arms, sent North by citizens of New-Orleans, in accordance with Order No. 21, issued by Gen. BUTLER Aug. 12, requiring all citizens either to deliver up their arms to the Military Commandant, or with permission of the Provost-Marshal to ship them North.

The following United States vessels were at Key West: Frigate St. Lawrence, J.F. GARDNER, Flag-Officer; steamer Santiago de Cuba, DANIEL B. RIDGELEY, Commander; steamer R.R. Cuyler, FRANCIS WINSLOW, Commander; Penguin, J.C. WILLIAMS, Lieutenant Commanding; Magnolia, J.H. SPOTTS, Commander; and schooner Chambers.

The Marion brings mails from United States steamship Mississippi, gunboat Oneida, and bark Arthur, at New-Orleans; and from frigate St. Lawrence, steamers St. Jago de Cuba and Magnolia, and schooner Chambers, at Key West.

From the New Era, published at Key West, we take the following paragraph relating to the health of that place:

"It is with pleasure we record a decrease to the cases of fever reported, and among the residents we have heard of but little sickness. The disease among the troops does not seem to have spread. To the wise precaution of turning the Barracoons into an hospital we attribute this relief. The fever seems now to confine itself to the recent arrivals, especially the workmen who have just come from the North to work on the railroad.

"Negro Colonization – 7"

The important points to rember here include: 1) recolonization is voluntary, it assumes many newly freed blacks will want to move away from the USA.
2) The program is government paid for, there were large sums authorized by Congress, most of which were never spent.
3) Our editors consider the whole idea impractical, but still worth the effort to run a small experiment.

Note the editorial on recolonization, perhaps a bit too optimistic?

“Latest Articles” is not the same as “Breaking News” (which is indeed abused). It means “latest THREAD” - something that someone posts. Doesn’t have to be current news.
