A new paper and other recent evidence offer important reassurances about the risk of breast cancer from hormone therapy to treat menopause symptoms.
Hormone therapy can help relieve menopause symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, sleep disturbances, vaginal issues, sexual problems and loss of bone density.
The new review provides much-needed clarity, according to JoAnn V. Pinkerton, MD, and Carolyn S. Wilson, MD.
"When prescribed to women after hysterectomy, estrogen therapy used alone at menopause did not increase the risk of invasive breast cancer. Longer durations of estrogen therapy use may increase risk. For women with an intact uterus who need combined estrogen and progestogen, the risk of breast cancer increased slightly and persisted after discontinuation," said Pinkerton. "Women and their healthcare providers should feel reassured about the safety of hormone therapy when used at menopause."
Their results, Pinkerton and her co-authors say in the accompanying editorial, "make a strong case" that hormone therapy taken at menopause does not increase the risk of invasive breast cancer for women who have received a hysterectomy.
The editorial notes that estrogen combined with progesterone increases breast cancer risk for women who have not undergone a hysterectomy, especially when used long-term. However, the authors point to another study indicating that the increased risk did not translate into a higher risk of death.
Further, the authors note that not all progestogens—medications that protect against estrogen-stimulated cancer—carry equal breast cancer risk. It appears that estrogen combined with micronized progesterone and dydrogesterone does not increase breast-cancer risk to the same degree as other combinations.
"Let's replace fear with knowledge," Pinkerton said. "Most healthy women under age 60 or within 10 years of having their last period and having bothersome symptoms can take hormone therapy without fear at menopause if taking estrogen alone or combined with progesterone."

I know a 75 year old woman who is stupidly still on the pill…. Because it makes her “feel” better
A 75 she’s chosen for quality of life rather than longevity.
A 75 she’s chosen for quality of life rather than longevity.
My doctor said the same thing.
Why aren’t they telling transgenders to stay off the hormones and massive amount of doses of estrogen that males like Bruce Jenner and Blair White are taking?
Yes, the trans people are unfortunately creating shortages of estrogen for post-menopausal women.
These are the same people who accuse dairy farmers of adding hormones to the milk and speeding up puberty…as they promote hormone therapy and promote sex between underage.

Exactly, what I thought of as well. They plan to make everyone miserable who is normal.
Not really. She fools herself. She claims without them she would still get hot flashes. Just not true.
I’m all for chowing quality of life She is just nuts
However NIH studies seem to indicate an inverse relationship to cancer risk when the patient uses HRT. Perhaps those incidents were not related to HRT at all. I know the folks I speak of will not consider HRT again. Perhaps I should ask them to simply consider it a miracle, I've seen a few so this is plausible.
In summary, this study shows a consistent protective effect of ever use of HRT against colorectal and liver cancers and an increased risk for gallbladder, breast, endometrium and bladder cancers. In addition to the results already published from observational studies and U.S. clinical trials2, 40, 42 this data from a southern European population could be of help in the risk-benefit assessment of HRT among postmenopausal women.
What KIND of hormones? Pills, BioIdentical creams? Big difference.
“the pill” - you mean birth-control pill?
If her doctor allows it and she thinks it helps, so be it.
May not be exactly the same as HRT pills but pretty close.
“It appears that estrogen combined with micronized progesterone and dydrogesterone does not increase breast-cancer risk to the same degree as other combinations.”
Au contraire. Per the Cleveland Clinic...
"Will my hot flashes stop after menopause? Some people still experience hot flashes after menopause. Postmenopausal hot flashes are caused by decreased estrogen levels. It is not uncommon to experience a random hot flash for years after menopause. If your hot flashes are bothersome or intensify, speak with your healthcare provider to rule out other causes."
Try DHEA instead. It stimulates the lost hormone detection and generation processes in natural proportions.
What KIND of estrogen? It matters.
