Traveling nurse, 52, is charged with murdering veteran, 97, 'after illegally administering shot of "something special" and disabling his oxygen machine'

A nurse in Kentucky has been arrested for allegedly unlawfully killing a 97-year-old World War 2 after she allegedly administered a sedative she said was 'something special' and disabled his oxygen monitoring machine.

Eyvette Hunter, 52, was indicted Monday on murder charges for the death of James Morris, a patient she was treating while employed at Baptist Health in Lexington, Kentucky on April 30.

A complaint filed with the Kentucky Board of Nursing, which stripped Hunter of her nursing license on Monday, reveals the events that led to Morris' death, which police called the 'direct result' of Hunter's actions.

Hunter was treating Morris when he became 'agitated and aggressive,' causing Hunter to contact a physician and a nurse practitioner for medication to calm him down, but her requests were denied.

The nurse then swiped a vial of Lorazepam meant for another patient and administered it to Morris.

Lorazepam is used to slow activity to the brain and induce relaxation, but serious breathing troubles are a known side effect.

When another employee saw what happened and asked Hunter what she had given Morris, she replied 'something special.'

As they put Morris back into bed, he became sedated, and the other employee once again asked Hunter what she gave him, to which she again responded 'something special.'

Another nurse then found Morris having trouble breathing, and the suspension order concluded Hunter had disabled or lowered the veteran's oxygen saturation machine so the alarm wouldn't go off.

Thank you for posting this, MomMD. I have heard heartbreaking stories from caregivers of elderly patients with dementia, even mild dementia. who were given ativan. I already knew benzos were a big no-no for the type of dementia my Dad suffered, and made sure to specify “no benzos” every time he was admitted to hospital. After hearing them, I was so glad I did!

Most nurses are great with elderly patients. Some are quick to cry “agitation” and “aggressive behaviors” when it is their nursing skills that are lacking. I had to really watchdog my Dad when he was in the hospital after Covid. The level of nursing care had obviously gone down from what it was pre-Covid, and while I sympathized with what they had gone through, it made for a difficult patient experience.

After telling me to remove his hearing aids before an ultrasound test (they easily get lost when transferring a patient), which of course I did, this nurse came charging in and began trying to give him a heparin shot while he was dozing. Of course the poor man reflexively moved his arms in a defensive protective way (not aggressive!), and she tried that agitation aggression schtick. I calmly explained she had frightened a sleeping man who could not hear, and now that he was awake could not read her lips as she was masked, and if she would wait a moment for me to explain to him in his “better” ear what she wanted to do, all would go well. And it did. No drugs needed. Just basic human decency.

Sorry to hear that. It seems that be the type of people that get hired. On another note a Wilmington NC woman recently died in the e.r. while waiting almost 5 HOURS. look it up https://www-wect-com.cdn.ampproject.org/v/s/www.wect.com/2022/08/23/medicare-regulators-confirm-woman-coded-er-waiting-room-after-waiting-5-hours-care/?amp_gsa=1&amp_js_v=a9&outputType=amp&usqp=mq331AQIKAGwASCAAgM%3D#amp_tf=From%20%251%24s&aoh=16613286820461&csi=1&referrer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com&ampshare=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.wect.com%2F2022%2F08%2F23%2Fmedicare-regulators-confirm-woman-coded-er-waiting-room-after-waiting-5-hours-care%2F

It’s seldom and I mean rare when a colored person who kills a white is investigated for a hate crime. It seems routine the other way.

As I’ve shared here before my son in laws coworker was shot and killed walking with his newlywed wife despite 1 of the killers saying

“ After saying he was glad he killed someone, Curry said, “and if I get out of here, I’m going to kill some other white motherf*****s,” Verdi testified. Curry is black.”

It was STILL not classified as a hate crime. Both the charged killers will each serve less than 20 years in prison.

What a sad story. There have been numerous such stories in the British press, and here we have one right here in the US.

ERs are notorious for long waits, of course, crowded as they are with Medicaid patients using them in place of GP’s or pediatrician’s offices or walk-in clinic.* Sounds like the triage team really fell down on the job, there.

*I’ve sometimes thought Medicare ought to require at least *some* small payment from a patient who goes to the ER for a mild bladder infection or sore throat or because their child has a common cold to discourage this. On the other hand, that might prevent not-so-bright mothers from taking their children to the ER when it really is warranted. Hmm.

BTW, you can delete everything at the tail end of a long url like that one, beginning with the question mark, and it will still work fine and won’t be so long as to shrink the font on the FR page.

I’ll shorten the irl’s. Thanks. As for we visits instead of gp..my GP is booked at least 2 weeks out. The next available colonoscopy was March of 2023. You just can’t find an open appointment. Even the DMV’s are 3 months out for spay and neuter..
... I could just move back to a blue state. That and the super aholes have left for fla, tn, s.c, NC, and Texas.

I never had trouble getting immediate appointments for my Dad with his GP when anything needing prompt attention popped up, either before or after Covid, but that is likely a local thing. We also have lots of walk-in clinics if you just need something for your flu symptoms or antibiotics for a child’s sore throat. Again, likely a local thing.

Yeah, plenty have moved to Tennessee. Before Covid, we got mostly the unreformed libs from the blue states. Their bad driving alone made me want to move somewhere else. Even the local Dems can’t stand them and call them “the granola crowd”. After Covid, we began to get more real conservatives and they are most welcome.

I hadn’t thought of moving to a blue state that has been drained of whacky libs. Hmm. That’s an idea.

Andy Beshear signed a law excluding “seriously mentally ill” people from the death penalty in April of this year

Someone please explain the logic of this ostensible virtue. It would seem even more likely for a mentally ill person to kill again than otherwise.

I just tried (twice) what you suggested and it didn't work for me.

Oops! So sorry. The type was so small I did not notice this was a Google search url, not the typical long url with referral codes, etc. (Just now went and got reading glasses.)

On those funky ones, you have to remove the extra bit at the beginning, too, to get this:

Again, my apologies.

DMV = Department of Motor Vehicles?

- Sure looks like “something special” herself.

Indeed. That's a face that looks like it never smiles... except maybe when killing someone.
