It's Time Microsoft Ends its Noxious Update Nonsense
08/23/2022 | Brian Griffin

Posted on 08/23/2022 11:12:33 AM PDT by Brian Griffin

On Saturday, my Windows PC went hog wild trying to update itself again. In doing so, it refused to respond promptly. On Sunday, my PC ran hot probably trying to seek out another viral infection. I'm really upset with this Microsoft update nonsense. Today, I noticed that a small dictionary I was keeping by my PC was very warm. The hypocrisy of Bill Gates babbling about global warming while Microsoft PCs waste vast amounts of electricity is truly galling.

In my opinion, Microsoft needs to force credit card (and other financial) account information off Windows PCs so Windows PCs are not an attractive target for thieves and hackers. It also needs to close off all security loopholes, even if that forces many other organizations to have to rewrite software.

I propose that credit card information and processing not be done on Windows PC or a seller's computer equipment. Instead, a mobile phone app would handle payment information processing. Neither Microsoft nor sellers would have internal financial software security worries. Instead, Google via Android and Apple via iPhones (and as usual, the banks) would have the security worries, and software security expenses.

Consumers would no longer enter their credit card information into their Windows PCs. If they tried, they might get a pop-up warning such as "4149 represents the first four digits of a VISA debit card. Do not ever enter financial account information into a Windows PC...."

Instead, Internet purchasers would see a box with say:
BIG RIVER BOOKS on the first line,
the purchase ID on the second line,
the name of the seller's bank (say CHASE) and the bank's ABA routing number on the third line,
and the seller's bank account number & the purchase amount on the fourth.

These seller bank accounts would typically be deposit only, except to the bank and the seller. A large company might utilize several bank accounts to cut its security risk.

If would-be puchasers don't recognize the bank name, they will probably not make the purchase.

The box would get scanned in sort of like a QR code. However, plain text would be used instead for security.

The app (and app maker) would then check the bank name and ABA routing number. An old bank name such as BBT would get blocked by the app, generating say BBT: obsolete bank name, with flags & asterisks, on the mobile phone.

A Northeast regional bank name might cause the app to place:
NY MA VT NH ME on one line and
PA NJ CT RI on the second line
to indicate the bank has branches in such states and that the seller should probably be from one of those states.

The app would then query the bank itself and ask about the account. The bank would provide the app with a response that might include:
the date the account was opened,
the name on the account,
the account type, and
the average 24-hour deposit amounts for certain time periods chosen by the bank, say for last 24 hours and the day a year ago and the day two years ago.

For large sellers, percentages of the last 24 hours might be provided instead.

On say a Black Friday, the bank might use the volume information from the two previous Black Fridays.

The app would display seller bank & bank account related text in various colors such as green, lime green, yellow, orange or red based on perceived security risk.

The would be-purchaser can then decide to pay or abandon the transaction. Internet purchaser payment account information might be set previously on the app or entered on a one-time use basis.

The bank would notify the seller of the payment and purchase ID by at least one means, other means being used to provide security check means. The seller can then ship the item or mark the service or hotel room paid for.

It's ordinary PC buyers like me that spend big money (indirectly) on Microsoft PC software, not Internet sellers of hotel rooms and Jeff Bezos. Microsoft needs to make Windows work well for PC buyers and users again, as its foremost priority. Microsoft needs to fully understand that its PC operating system business is highly endangered. I use my PC to get things done, every day that Microsoft lets me. I use more secure office grade Windows machines (or a Chromebook) to buy about one or two items a year.

I was running Notepad and the on-screen keyboard.

They are not demanding applications.

I dread turning my PC because it almost always wants to update and bogs down for hours.

WinOS must be so problematic it never stops getting fixed

Ive gone to IPads almost exclusively now

Microsoft has adopted the Facebook mantra. You get a free OS because you are the product, and as a result you get updated, willing or not.

next , the brain microchip going for stupid chicks and emasculated men who want the long nails intact and not to deal with reality…

Microsoft’s been harangued for years for being “insecure,” and their fix for that is to force patching up-to-date, and now they take guff for that. Unreal.

Agreed. Patch or no patch, they get grief.

I think part of the problem (speaking from outside the environment), is that MS' method for patching is onerous and intrusive. Not to mention required, and forced reboots. I honestly don't mind frequent updates--I'd prefer more often than once per month--as they keep systems secure as problems arise.

I see some people need not the brainwashing microchip forced update in their brains to be happy about becoming a Microsoft just because they bought a tool

“In the title they say MS needs to end “noxious update nonsense,” but then in their screed, they say that Microsoft needs to patch their security vulnerabilities.

Which is it? You understand that MOST patches are for security purposes, esp. the ones that force a reboot. Microsoft’s been harangued for years for being “insecure,” and their fix for that is to force patching up-to-date, and now they take guff for that. Unreal.”

I suspect Microsoft knows its vulnerabilities and updates to prevent the latest attacks.

However, new attacks will be made as long as any vulnerability remains.

Yeah, so? So you want the OS to block all 16 digit numbers that happen hit the checksum? What if they application has broken up the entry into blocks so it’s not A 16 digit number? The fact of the matter is computers are for data processing. And a significant chunk of the data we process is financial, that what moves our world. Demanding the OS not allow the input of financial data is demanding the OS not be useful.

I have a Chromebook and it doesn’t have the constant update problems of a Windows PC.

I have an Android phone and it doesn’t have the constant update problems of a Windows PC.

I’ve been told Apple products don’t have the annoying update problems my Windows PC has.

My conclusion is that Microsoft could do better.

Notepad in your case is running in the foreground - you interact with it and when not doing anything it’s in an idle state - not using CPU. You likely have tons of apps running in the background - not interactive as in you dont see or directly use them, but they are eating up CPU time. Pre-built computers are loaded with these apps which offer little to no benefit to you, but gather and send tons of data about your computer and how you use it to Google and other companies that use you as their product. These software makes pay lots of money to computer makers to have them preinstalled and auto-run at startup. You need to identify and remove those apps to regain control of your computer and get it to a calm and cooler state. Windows and every OS forbthat matter have tons of software running in the background which are required and in aggregate will consume a decent amount of CPU and RAM, but typically in negligible amounts so you dont notice any performance impact.

“So you want the OS to block all 16 digit numbers....”

They would not be blocked, only generating a pop-up.

They would be in a form.

The 16-digit strings you typed that were not for a credit or debit card are?

Now to the fun part - how do you know which apps to kill and which to keep: Look online and you will find instructions or find someone you know who is a computer gamer. Gamers know how to clean up Windows to squeeze every ounce of performance they can yet make the OS stable and easy to use.

Windows 10 on Linux VM host runs terribly and you limit what you can do due to the hardware absraction of virtualization. Also getting virtualizatuon to work is an advanced concept outside the scope of most general computer users.

“...they are eating up CPU time”

It seems about half the time I get on the web my PC goes crazy.

And if I stay off the web, I start to get you need to update your anti-virus database messages after about a week.

My PC has become more usable since March, but it still gets big problems.

“Microsoft needs to force credit card (and other financial) account information off” That means BLOCKED. Not just generating a popup.

Who knows. It’s a big world. Lots of possible types of data.

Having gone through the process of making an application “secure” I know how many problems you run into trying to block data types. Like “proper” security would not allow you to use an apostrophe in a web form because that can be used in an escape sequence to force code to run on the server. Sounds good on the surface. All the way until some customer wants to use your software to send something to somebody names O’Brien.

It’s a straight up non-starter. Your demand would render the computer useless for basically every business. It’s unreasonable and silly.

Unfortunately you have malware on your PC which is why your browser is behaving that way and why you are getting false antivirus update messages. This also explains why your PC is slow and running hot. You likely have a bitcoin miner running at all times, which is what those fake antivirus scams are installing these days. Best method to fix is to use your recovery CD/thumbdrive/process (some modern systems like Microsoft Surface have recovery built into the BIOS) and reinstall everything back to factory state, however you will lose any files you created on the system in the process. You will need to backup important documents, photos, videos and other files to a USB thumb drive or external disk before starting the recovery process.
