Researchers Shocked As Video Captures Navy-Trained Dolphins Slurping Up Venomous Sea Snakes

The U.S. Navy caught video footage of their dolphins gobbling up poisonous sea snakes after strapping cameras to the mammals and releasing them to hunt in the San Diego Bay, according to Science Alert.

“The cameras, strapped to six bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) from the US National Marine Mammal Foundation (NMMF), recorded six months of footage and audio – providing us with new insights into these mammals’ hunting strategies and communications,” Science Alert reported.

“The dolphin clicked as it approached the snake and then sucked it in with a bit more head jerking as the flopping snake tail disappeared and the dolphin made a long squeal,” NMMF wrote.

The dolphins “displayed no signs of illness” after consuming the snakes.

NMMF wrote that they caught footage of the dolphins eating live fish, “for the first time.”

“While freely swimming in San Diego Bay, one dolphin caught 69 resident fish, 64 demersal, 5 near the surface, while the other caught 40, 36 demersal and 4 near the surface. Two other dolphins were observed capturing 135 live native fish in a sea water pool.”

The footage showed dolphins using both”sight and sound” to catch their prey.

“At distance the dolphins always used echolocation to find fish. Up close, vision and echolocation appeared to be used together,” the research team wrote.

In August 2021, researchers got a photo of dolphins handling a massive Beni anaconda snake. But researchers determined that “they rather were playing with the snake than trying to eat it.”

We really shouldn’t be “shocked” at anything that occurs in nature, especially in the sea. They’re animals, after all.

I had to laugh...the handler is probably up there bellowing into some kind of communication device:

"HEY! I SENT YOU DOWN THERE TO HUNT FOR MINES AND TERRORISTS, NOT EFFING BELLY UP TO AN AQUATIC SNACK BAR!"

Reminds me of one of Rush’s favorites he’d often share on his show - the Save-The-Whale whackos all gathered together to release a baby sea lion to the ocean and they all clap clap clap and then VAROOM!! along emerges a killer whale and just gets a mouth full of fresh yummy meat as the whackos gasp in horror at Nature’s cycle of Life.

Since when are there poisonous sea snakes in San Diego Bay? Are these exotic species that have been accidentally introduced? Or is someone planting them?

Snakes? I wonder if there’s any way to get dolphins to the DNC Convention.

Sea snakes are native to the Pacific. Where the Pacific goes they go. I don’t think they’re in the Atlantic but I will have to check that. As far as venomous goes they are extremely venomous and I think no antitoxin available. The good news is they are extremely docile, very short fangs I think I read they wouldn’t penetrate a wet suit. They’re reported to be so docile you have almost force them to bite.

Tursiops (truncatus tursiops) have been around for over 2 million years. Plenty of time to develop carnivore feeding.
Sea snakes can’t bite through the porpoise’s skin (too small teeth)- and porpoises may “snap” the snake like a whip to stun it, then gobble whole from tail to just before the head, then drop it for the small fish and crabs to chow out.

Neat they have this on video. Not many have seen this. Porpoises are pretty sharp critters, and imitate human speech (at high speed/frequency, like a burst transmission).

**Snakes? I wonder if there’s any way to get dolphins to the DNC Convention.**

That would be suicide. No living thing could eat that much poison and survive.
