AAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaannnddd Here’s ANOTHER 12 (TWELVE!!) reasons why Linux will never beat windows.
Send this to Gramma and ask her which ‘distro’ she wants to use to email pictures of the grandkids and cookie recipes. (I’ve tried it- the answer was “Huhhhhh...?”)
AAAAaannnnnnd another 12 excuses will be given why I am wrong...with complex explanation of the supreme benefits of Linux over Windows or how one Linux ‘distro’ is better than another, and how you are not a real man if you are using ‘Mint’ instead of the command line. (Hey- it was good enough for granpa!)
NOTE: I am a 30 year software engineer, under both Windows and Unix/Linux embedded. I 100% agree that Linux is a superior operating system- in ALL the ways that the average user will not know about, care about, or be able to comprehend.
Dang!
I thought that said ‘BISTROS’!...................😜
The bad old days of Linux are gone.
Bump for later read...
So, while we’re on the subject of Linux…
…what is the current status of Red Hat & Centos?
I have to hem as closely to Red Hat as possible, as that’s the standard in the chip design tool world. (Well, maybe SUSE in Europe.)
For a long time, Centos was basically the free, unsupported version of Red Hat. However, IBM announced about a year ago that this relationship was going to be changed. (I forget the details of the change.)
So, has that change taken place? If so, what are most people in the “I need Red Hat-isms, but can’t afford the license” camp doing?
Deja Dup Backup Tool - "support for local, remote(ftp, sftp, webdav) or google drive"
I use it with an ext HDD
Best thing about backing up Linux is that all your config files are also in your home folder so as long as you backup hidden files, when you recover, all your setting are there, browser bookmarks and history(even open tabs), email client accounts and settings, programs preferences.
I have a HP Mini 210-1032CL PC from about 2009 or 2010, what should I put on it, and would that make it faster than W10 on it now?
Seems like it's just muddying the already murky waters to not put some context on "Best".
"Best except for the actual best"?
(Dons flameproof suit...)
I replaced my home computer with Linux Mint many years ago and have never regretted it.
FWIW... over 12 years ago, I had teenage daughters who used social media and a wife who hardly knew how to turn on a computer. I also owned a business which demanded I run windows (all insurance brokerages ran on windoze based software). I got so sick of secretaries trying to install nonsensical virus laden stuff, and kids who insisted on unsafe programs at home that I just installed Warren Woodford’s MEPIS on my machine at home. The girls griped a bit, but figured out I was serious and I never had any problems with malware. I started running Windows inside virtual box at work and poof, no more problems that could not be fixed with a wipe and reinstall.
What has been interesting is my wife. If you look up the word “technophobe” you will get a picture of her. She is TOTALLY un digital in every area. After MEPIS, we went to Ubuntu, then Mint. I run MX with KDE on my personal machine. My wife gets very frustrated when she has to operate a windows box. She has “learned” to do everything she wants, email, letters, videos, surfing, etc on Linux and considers the learning curve on Windows to be too high to bother.
It is not that Windows is harder... or easier. It is just what you learn.
PS. I have retired and now work “full time” trading. I use a dedicated windoze box because my ib software runs mostly on windows, along with some analytical/charting stuff. That is likely to change and I will change with it, but I am not a “I HATE WINDOWS” guy... well...., maybe just a little, but I am more like the guy who hated his wife and divorced her and has not seen here in 10 years, so doesn’t care much one way or another.
The only one I use a lot is Raspbian, on the Pi 4 and 400.
