Trial suggests metformin effective at reducing odds of serious outcomes for COVID-19 patients seeking early treatment

In work published in the New England Journal of Medicine, researchers—led by the University of Minnesota Medical School and School of Public Health—have found that metformin, a commonly prescribed diabetes medication lowers the odds of emergency department visits, hospitalizations, or death due to COVID-19 by over 40 percent—and over 50 percent if prescribed early in onset of symptoms. The study also found no positive effect from treatment with either ivermectin or low-dose fluvoxamine.

"We are pleased to contribute to the body of knowledge around COVID-19 therapies in general, with treatments that are widely available," said Carolyn Bramante, MD, principal investigator of the study and an assistant professor of internal medicine and pediatrics at the U of M Medical School. "Our trial suggests that metformin may reduce the likelihood of needing to go to the emergency room or be hospitalized for COVID-19."

Bramante noted that this was a secondary outcome of the trial; the primary outcome included whether someone had low oxygen on a home oxygen monitor, and none of the medications in the trial prevented the primary outcome.

The 1,323 participants in the trial were limited to adults with a body mass index greater than or equal to 25 kg/m2, which qualifies as overweight—for instance, someone who was at least five feet and six inches tall and weighed more than 155 pounds. To qualify for the study, volunteers enrolled within three days after receiving a positive COVID-19 test. It was among the first randomized clinical trials for COVID-19 to include pregnant women.

The study included those who were vaccinated and those who were not. This is the first published trial where the majority of participants were vaccinated.

The key here, to me, is that it is very likely people with higher BMIs have metabolic syndrome and glucose and insulin control issues/fatty liver. These are serious comorbidities, if you aren’t already on the healthy upturn, by going lower carb, exercising, sleeping well, etc. In those situations, metformin would already effectively be pretty useless, it would seem.

I don’t think anyone here cares what researchers have to say any longer. Of course, that’s my opinion - others may differ.

Interestingly, my Dr put me on Metformin for type2 diabetes the same week I came down with Covid . My case was fairly mild. Mostly just fatigued.

Metformin is a popular anti-aging and longevity drug. If I had a friendly doc I would try it out. This longevity Doc takes it///// And promotes it

“”Mostly just fatigued.””

That is what I’ve heard from others also. I don’t understand how people ended up hospitalized. We’ve learned we were told so many lies for the past 2 1/2 years - have the stats on hospitalizations and deaths been lies also?

Hey - of course, they are. THAT opinion doesn’t agree with the way we see things so any differing opinion is automatically a “lie”, right? Differences of opinion aren’t legitimate anymore - those are called “lies.”

I posted earlier on a different thread that Dr. Redfield - former CDC director said the other day that the “vaccine” was just medicine made to be taken over and over...hence - the boosters...I think he tried to get that out earlier but no one was paying attention.

“That is what I’ve heard from others also. I don’t understand how people ended up hospitalized.”

One size does not fit all with Covid. Just because YOU didn’t have a problem and people you know haven’t had a problem doesn’t mean that people with certain genetic codes can escape bad effects.

https://covid19.nih.gov/news-and-stories/decoding-genetics-behind-covid19-infection

I have a rare autoantibody. Science hasn’t studied it much because it so rare but even in the ones that have been studied like Anti Jo there is a lot they dont understand. At this point I am afraid to get any vaccine because there is just so much that is not known.

Genetics, no doubt, plays a key in how a body responds to Covid. It also will influence the aftermath.

For those of us who are elderly, and/or obese, black, in nursing facilities—that is to say, people who have little vitamin D on board—Covid was not a joke. I am a strong fit woman who spends a lot of time outdoors year round, but I am elderly and have a history of respiratory disease, so for me Covid was a disaster. It hit me very hard. I would not have survived but for my friend, who is a physician and had warned me to tank up on zinc, melatonin, and D. Even so I’ve had lasting lung damage and can’t do a lot of things I used to be able to do easily. It’s the elderly and chronically sick who died of the disease but it’s the young who are dying from the vax.

Please look into the GlyNAC, Urolithin A, and Taurine threads I’ve put up.

You may find some additional recovery is possible.

Do all politicians and all celebrities who supposedly had COVID have good genetics?

You should know that linking to something from NIH isn’t going to be believed - not anymore!!!

I find it sad that you don’t understand how important of a role genetics plays in all things to do with your life.

From the way you metabolize Vitamins to how early trauma can impact psychotic breaks later in life.. yes, there are alleles that have been studied for that.

Should you ever find yourself in diagnosis hell get a DNA test.

Nebula has some of the genetic studies on COVID...not sure why you are denying genetics can play a role..but whatever

I cannot understand how anyone can believe genetics don’t play a role in COVID....but you can find many articles from many institutions on this..like this one

now lets wrap the genetic issue around to the metformin issue in Covid.

Accept , for pete’s sake, the genetics plays a role in reaction to COVID. If you have faulty genes directing your Warfare with COVID...can metformin help?

Possibly

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8565822/

Metformin, a drug prescribed to treat type 2 diabetes, has been reported to possess antitumor activity via immunity activation. However, the influence of metformin on natural killer (NK) cells is not fully understood. Here, we investigated whether metformin exerts a potent anticancer effect by activating NK cells. The results showed that sustained exposure to metformin enhances the cytolytic activity of NK-92 cells. Moreover, this enhancement of cytotoxicity by metformin was also observed in NK cells from healthy peripheral blood and cancer patient ascites. Mechanistically, metformin induced activation of the JAK1/2/3/STAT5 and AKT/mTOR pathways in a p38 MAPK-dependent manner rather than an AMPK-dependent manner. In vivo experiments, metformin also improved cancer surveillance of NK cells in mouse models of lymphoma clearance and metastatic melanoma. Additionally, combination treatment with metformin and anti-PD-1 antibodies increased the therapy response rates of B16F10 melanoma. Moreover, metformin treatment increased NK cell and T cell infiltration in tumors. Therefore, these results provide a deeper understanding of metformin on the effector function of NK cells and will contribute to the development and applications of metformin in cancer treatment strategies.

so IF the General directing the Warfare against Covid is faulty - CD56bright... and Science eventually determines years later that the faulty General is at fault for bad COVID response....can metformin help..

Again,possibly

If you don’t have a faulty General directing the warfare can Metformin help. Who knows...but it is worth trying.

The real results are that both hospitalization and mortality are rare. “Due to the rarity of the hospitalization (2.0% overall) or mortality (0.2%)” It is a limited study with acknowledged flaws and contradicts existing valid studies, RCT or observational.

The “experts” failed to drill down sufficiently in the data to determine what variables were involved in what outcomes.

Which of the three referenced studies did you get that quote from?

It is very difficult to prove things with studies. And yes, there are a myriad of factors.

But I will tell you this. I used ONE study out of foreign country that showed an SNP that I have makes me more likely to have an auto antibody that develops into a nasty syndrome.

Sure enough, I tested positive for the auto antibody. A lot of Drs missed it.

So my response is that I don’t need studies to prove anything. I need the information to know where to look for possible solutions. Metformin is worth a try for Covid and cancer.
