Disparities in Who's Getting Good Sleep for Black, Other Minority Communities

[EXCERPT] Sleep problems are common among Americans, but a growing body of research reveals glaring racial and ethnic disparities in sleep quality and quantity that have major health consequences.

Compared with white Americans, people who are African American or Black, Hispanic or Latinx, American Indian, Native Alaskan, and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander are more likely to have trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, and getting deep, restorative sleep. These groups are also more likely to have sleep disorders such as insomnia and obstructive sleep apnea, yet are less likely to receive a doctor’s diagnosis and get treatment for these problems, researchers have found. (We’ll dive into the numbers below.)

The result isn’t just feeling tired during the day. Studies, including a review published in 2019 the journal Nature and Science of Sleep, link slumber inequities with higher risk for chronic, life-threatening health conditions that racial and ethnic minority groups develop at higher rates than white people. These include type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, depression, anxiety, and even an early death.

And research points to systemic racism as the major, underlying cause. [END EXCERPT]

Read it for yourself, it's basically an editorial review of several "studies" blaming poor sleep in non-whites mainly on "system racism."

"And research points to systemic racism as the major, underlying cause." "“Racial and ethnic sleep disparities can be considered the consequence of preventable structural and institutional, personally experienced, and internalized racism,” Dr. Jackson says was a bottom line point of the report."

I'm not saying that much of it doesn't make sense--the tie between sleep and health, for example--but don't you get tired of that same old boogeyman ("systemic racism") getting trotted out as the "major, underlying" cause of all the ills of "the marginalized"?

Is there anything that “systemic racism” can’t do?

Neighbors making noise, loud music, hanging out on the street in the small hours, loudly, can’t ask anyone to turn it down because then you’ll have trouble with them....black neighbors in a black neighborhood. How is that racism?

Obesity and apnea, crowded dwellings because of poverty, I don’t buy the case for racism, but at least I can see it.

Not the noise.

So that’s why they went all FBI on the 7-11. They couldn’t sleep. And it’s whitey’s fault.

A lot of these “scientific studies” are simply not true. But they do serve to reinforce the validity of The Bell Curve.

Does it ever occur to some people that correlation is not causation.

It’s not lack of sleep that causes the problems, but likely, the problems causing the sleep problems.

My boss and I were on a business trip. At breakfast I told him I had slept unusually good, like the way I imagine an innocent man sleeps.

Just shook his head and didn’t ask any further questions...
