Adjustable gas plug: M1 Garand
Vanity | Self

Posted on 08/17/2022 11:31:47 AM PDT by Tucsonican

I'm looking for feedback regarding adjustable gas plugs for an M1 Garand. M2 Ball and equivalents, like most other ammo, isn't all that easy to come by but I've been able to find plenty of 150gr 30-06 though it's generally at higher pressures than M2. My understanding is that an adjustable gas plug will allow me to dial in adjustments for modern, higher pressure ammo, heavier bullet weights, etc. If anyone has experience with, and recommendations regarding, these plugs I'd be happy to hear them.

With the drilled Schuster gas plug for the M1A, I have had no problems with shooting 168 gr and 175 gr Sierra Match Kings loaded to about 2600 fps

Actually, it’s slower-burning powder that’s a problem.

Fast-burning powder peaks pressure and then drops off again by the time the bullet gets to the gas port.

Garands are very substantial weapons and are generally not fragile antiques. I shoot, and own 3 of them. As long as you are not shooting heavy projectiles loaded for high speed, long range big game use, you should be just fine. Best rule of thumb (Garand joke intended), any 150 grain full metal jacket round produced by a reputable and known manufacturer is OK. Stay away from hand loads you have not personally produced, because you have no idea what was used in loading the round and how carefully it was measured.
