One person was killed in an apparent alligator attack in South Carolina on Monday, officials said.
The large alligator was spotted "near the edge of a pond" in Sun City Hilton Head, an adult-only community, "guarding what was believed to be a person," the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office said.
Responders found the gator and a dead person, the sheriff's office said. The victim hasn't been identified.

Alligator euthanized, victim identified after attack in Sun City: Sheriff's office
Prayers for Nancy Becker and her family and friends.
Parts of Sun City are, I suppose. Sun City Hilton Head is huge. Most of the residents on the south side of SCHH bought their houses about 20 years ago -- the residents there are generally older.
But the newer part we live in (the north side) has younger people. Several are in their early 50s. (Yes, it's possible to get in under the supposed '55 and over' requirement)
LOL!
Wow, did you know this poor lady? SO sad.
Yes, we see people fishing in the many lagoons at SCHH all the time. Can you keep what you catch?
Our house is on a lagoon as well. So far we've just seen one juvenile alligator there occasionally.
*Everyone* we've spoken to at SCHH says they love it there! Those many, many comments did influence our decision to move there. :-)
We are still not quite moved in... our house in CT isn't quite ready to sell yet. We do a lot of driving back 'n forth between CT and SC these days.
Yup. The authorities euthanized this nearly 10 ft. long gator that killed the woman, but... there are many other gators still living near lagoons in Sun City Hilton Head. And plenty of babies and juvenile gators.
Please see post 41. I posted updates to this sad story...
WOW, amazing story! Well told, too. :-)
Yes. Thank you for the ping, FRiend.
Poor darling, living that long and dying that way, so sad.
I'm just speechless... incredibly sad way to go. Prayers for Nancy Becker and her family.
A SunCity friend just stopped by, he said she was a widow and lived alone.
The article did not say the man was killed by the alligator.
Aww.... :-(
Back here in Connecticut... Yet again, a black bear attacked our garbage bin on Sunday night, strewing garbage all over the street. *sigh*
Life with critters!
See updates in post #41. The victim was an 88-year-old woman (not a man), and unfortunately she was killed by a nearly 10-foot-long alligator.
