Houma native Tim Trahan shows off his mounted state record bluegill. The fish, which he caught May 30, werighs in at 2.24 pounds.
Fishing in his neighbor's pond, Houma native Tim Trahan said he didn't realize what he had hooked until he reeled it in.
"Actually, I was amazed by the size of it," he said. "I thought I was back at home fishing for sheepheads."
Trahan had caught the a state record bluegill, weighing in at 2.24 pounds. The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and the state Outdoor Writers Association have since confirmed it, and now Trahan and his prize catch are in the record books.
The previous record, held by Dwaine Payne, was 1.72 pounds, caught in 2016.
Trahan, 65, caught the fish May 30 near his home in Arcadia, a small town in north Louisiana about midway between Shreveport and Monroe. Because of the varying readings from different scales, he didn't want to celebrate until it was official. He said he weighed it twice and it came back with two different weights within 10 minutes of each other, so he waited for a game warden to certify it.
Now, he said, he can savor the victory.

That’s a big one.
Large bluegill can put up a real fight.
L
They are excellent eating.
Indeed they can! As a kid/young man, we used to fly-cast for them, using little balsa “popper” lures. Tons of fun. Good eating, too!
Until last year, I would paddle my kayak to the places where there were lots of bluegills. My flyrod was named “the blue gill slayer”
Where as bass fishermen measure catches in pounds, blue gills are measured in ounces.
Alas, I got to the point where I couldn’t get out of the kayak. I had to cease slaying the blue gills
“They are excellent eating.”
Yup.
There is a 3-point method of carving out the meat, such that you eliminate the bones.
Damn reporters cain't git nothin' right. d;^)
I am confused. Is Trahan a Houma native or is he a Homer native. Article says he caught the whopper in a pond near Arcadia. He is also wearing his white rubber boots commonly known as Chalmette Rebocks in South Louisiana.
Does this have anything to do with Huma Abedin and Anthony’s Weiner?
That’s a beauty!
Now THAT’S a bluegill!
We used to live just outside Houma.
Ever fished from a float tube or pontoon boat?
No, I haven’t
In my younger days I fished from an aluminum boat for bass.
The kayak was for exercise and the fishing was for resting until the fishing became more important than paddling.
