Officer killed after shooting during training exercise inside Anacostia Library
A library police officer was killed during a training exercise in the Anacostia Neighborhood Library in D.C.
It happened around 3:30 p.m. Thursday.
Police arrived in the library on Good Hope Road Southeast for a report of a shooting. They found a library police officer who had been shot and was unconscious and not breathing. They took her to the hospital where she was pronounced dead, D.C. police Chief Robert Contee said in a news conference.
There was an ASP baton training taking place at one of the library’s room that involved some six people, including the trainer — a retired D.C. police officer — and several officers, Contee said.
At the end of the training, the trainer, who was contracted by library police to conduct training, fired a shot and struck the officer.
Contee said the findings are preliminary and a lot of investigation needs to be done, but he’s not sure why the trainer had a live weapon in a training environment.
“It’s not good practice to do that,” Contee said, adding that what happened was a very “unfortunate” and “tragic” event.
Delaware libraries have had them for quite a while, in City of Wilmington for some years, actually. Talked with one in New Castle County day before yesterday.
To keep the bums out ?
Probably to keep you from complaining about the bums...they have rights, ya know. [/s]
Weird story all around. Followup should be interesting.
Noisy day at the library.
Wasn’t there another story recently just like this, where someone got shot and killed during a police training session?
Negligent discharge.
They’ll find some way to blame it on the deceased.
Sundaes need gravy, y’all. /s
The same sort of thing happened just south of me in Florida six years ago.
The cop served no jail time. None. Remember, folks, these are the 'pros' the media are always talking about.
I’ve said it on FR many times and I’ll say it again - the last place I want to be is around cops with guns particularly at the range or training. If I see them come into my local range I packed my stuff up and leave. It’s a safety thing, not a I hate cops thing!
If it was in the library, did they use a silencer?
On the libraries have cops thing...

Why did the gun have live ammo?
Notice that neither tha name of the RPO nor the Library LEO
have been published, WTF?
The cops in Washington have killed Ashlee Babbittm, and a librarian and both gettting off without a consequence?
This is what happens when cops are re-imagined as social workers.
Has the shooter’s name been released? It took months or weeks for Byrd to be publicly ID’d.
Dceeeee
Need more be said
Seems like overkill.
(pun intended)
Library cops are there to protect twerking drag queens who are civically reading to your kids, you homophobe, you!
Well Alec Baldwin copy cat, one never train with live ammunition in gun, two never point a gun at another person, three never have your finger on the trigger.
Anacostia has a library?
Something tells me it’s fairly easy to find an empty seat in the Anacostia library.
